Who’s the worst college football head coach of all time?

I nominated Woody Widenhofer
Head coaching record
Overall
27–71–1 (college)
Never had a winning season as HC. He went 5-6 two times, once at Missouri and once at Vanderbilt, and they were his two best seasons.
Went 0-8 twice in SEC conference play: 1997 and 2001.

Watson Brown with Dennis Franchione a close second.

Greg Robinson at Syracuse. Maybe not the worst but definitely bottom ten. Or five.
ETA: Some highlights:
Robinson had a 5–37 overall record, and a 2–25 record in the Big East, which is the lowest winning percentage for a non-interim coach in school history. In two of those four years, Syracuse suffered the only double-digit losing seasons in program history.
Robinson also "officially" owns two of Syracuse's only three winless seasons in school history.
This sad sack of shite read from "The Little Engine That Could" at his last Syracuse press conference.

Picking on a coach from Vandy or Mizzou is like picking on a retarded kid.
Find a coach at a school with more resources who failed miserably. Like, say, Cam Cameron who was utter arse at the NCAA and NFL levels as a head coach.

But still two 0-8 SEC seasons and never finishing .500 is downright awful

Not sure how Chad Morris had a winning record in his third year at SMU but man he was god awful at Arkansas.

Mike Locksley, currently the head coach at Maryland, has a career record of 8-43 as a head coach.
While at New Mexico from 2009-2011 he went 2-26. Off the field while at New Mexico, he was accused of sexual harassment by an administrative assistant before coaching a game and punched an assistant coach resulting in a 10 day suspension.

Curley Hallman 4 years @LSU won 16 games, Orgeron won 15 games one season.
Orgeron will likely be fired before surpassing Hallman's 28 losses. He tied Curley's win total in Burrow's vs game at LSU v Miami

Curley went 10-2 at Southern Miss one year and was a .500 coach at 39-39. Nowhere near the worst of all time.

John Blake.
First, he was a DL coach for Dallas Cowboys and started the whole “Aikman is racist” story. He was fired after teammates like Irvin, Smith, Haley and Deion denied the claims and supported Aikman.
Then, he was head coach at Oklahoma 96-98 and led the Sooners to their worst 3-year record ever—12-22, all losing seasons—before getting canned for Bob Stoops.
Years later, he was DL coach at North Carolina and ended up fired and the NCAA show-caused him for working with an agent to lure players.
So, a liar, the worst coach Oklahoma ever had and a cheating scumbag. A real triple-threat.

Joe Avezzano at Oregon State from 1980 to 1984.
He compiled a record of 6–47–2.
He had two 14-game losing streaks, separated only by a 31–28 come-from-behind win over Fresno State in 1981 (at the time the greatest comeback in NCAA history, giving him his first victory at OSU).
So basically, if he didn't have one miracle win, he would've gone 0-28 to start his career at OSU.

Guy coached 348 games and had a .392 career winning percentage. He coached at six different schools and only had a winning record at his first stop, Austin Peay. I'm sure there's been worse coaches than Brown but there's never been a long-lasting head coach who was as bad as him.

Ellis Johnson was also a terrible head coach. But, he was regarded as a fantastic defensive coach and recruiter. He was LB coach at Bama in ‘92. He was Gamecocks’ DC and helped sign Clowney. He was also at Auburn and suggested they put a guy in the EZ on the Kick Six play. He’s had teams play in national championships and a bunch of SECCGs.
But he was 17-40 as head coach at Garner-Webb, Citadel and most famously, Southern Miss. I don’t recall him having a winning season. He might have squeezed a 6-5, 6-6 year in there somewhere. The Citadel was like 12-22 under him. He took over Southern Miss who had just had a 12-win season, promptly went 0-12 and was fired in year 1. That was his final head coaching gig.

First school I thought of was K State and...
Doug Weaver from 1960-66 went 8-60-1
He also went 3-18-1 at SIU. The reason he got the job is he was AD and named himself coach.

John Blake.
Despite his overall record as college head coach, Blake was an great recruiter, bringing in more than half of the 2000 championship team’s 22 starters, including future N.F.L. players like safety Roy Williams and linebacker Rocky Calmus.[2]

Idk, Curley’s last coaching job was at a high school in Muscle Shoals, AL. He was fired there too after losing seasons in his first four seasons as HC.
