It is Rick Venturi. 1-31-1 in 3 seasons as Northwesterns coach. 0-26-1 in the Big 10.
The 1 win was a 27-22 win over a 4-8 Wyoming team. The tie was a 0-0 tie against 1-8-2 Illinois.
For good measure, Venturi was 2-17 as an NFL coach as well

Dennis Franchione isn't even close to being the worst collegiate head coach of all-time. He's the very definition of a snake oil salesman but he won more than he lost. I still feel that had the Albert Means scandal never occurred, Fran would have won championships at Alabama. That 2002 Alabama football team was the best in the SEC by the end of the season. Probation and Fran's decision to quit on the team saw it finish the season on a sour note. He was also an above average recruiter at Bama and found a lot of diamonds in the rough, particularly on defense, that went on to become All-SEC caliber players.

I know he's been mentioned but we need to appreciate just how bad Ellis Johnson was.
When he took over Southern Miss they were hot off of a recent Top 25 ranking at the top of what-is-now G5. Like today's Cincy, Houston, Boise tier.
12 months later they're winless, not even competitive and have plummeted to obscurity, never to return.

The worst is the guy UL had that sued them after he was fired.

Buddy Teevens at Tulane has to be on the list.
Teevens was pretty terrible at Tulane going 11-45 from 1992-96..He somehow got the Stanford job and went 10-23 from 2002-04. In 2005, he returned to his alma mater, Dartmouth, for his second stint where he is still head coach today. In his first stint at Dartmouth from 1987-91, he was 26-22-2. In his second stint he is currently 79-71.. His overall record at Dartmouth, Tulane, and Stanford is 139-170-2. He combined for a 21-68 record in 8 years at Tulane and Stanford.

That was the same year LSU's OBJ returned a long FG for a TD IIRC.
If you weren't putting a guy back after that happened, you were an idiot. So even if it was "his idea" it isn't much of a compliment.

Not the worst ever, but most entertaining.....

Yeah, it’s Ellis Johnson and it’s really not even close.

I’m biased as a Hog fan, but Chad Morris has to be in the conversation.
18-40 overall, 8-30 conference record. Only 1 winning season (7-5 at that) in 5 as a head coach. Zero P5 wins in his career. Zero SEC wins.
Not just that, he lost to the likes of San Jose State, Western Kentucky, Colorado State and North Texas while he was at Arkansas. Hell, he wasn’t just losing to those G5 teams, a few of those games were blowouts.
Additionally, though this doesn’t count against his head coaching record or resume, Clemson got astronomically better as a program after he left. They never won more than 10 regular season games with him as OC, and they’ve been in the CFP every year since he left. Sonny Dykes had SMU at 10 wins just two seasons after Morris left. Sam Pittman won 3 SEC games and almost as many total games at Arkansas in one COVID-shortened season as Morris did in 2 years at Arkansas.
Basically, whenever he leaves a program, it gets *much* better.

Mike Shula at Bama hands down. With the talent and unfettered cheating and you can't win more than a third of your games?

Dennis Green improved on Venturi at Northwestern by going 10-45. He was better at Stanford at 16-18 from 1989-91 and parlayed that into the Vikings job in 1992. His work as a 49ers assistant was probably the reason for that.

Hallman is hard to beat. I could easily argue Mike Archer would have done better if he coached another 4 years.

Curley went 10-2 at Southern Miss one year and was a .500 coach at 39-39. Nowhere near the worst of all time.
Curley was pretty bad.
The assistants ran that team. They had to pull Curley off players he wanted to beat up. Bower and a couple others didn't follow him to LSU and that made all the difference/
Still not even the worst coach in USM history, though.
