The Pirates are at the precarious point of a team's development that they have to turn all of these prospects into actual players. Whether that's by promotion or through trades, it has to happen over the next two seasons. It's, I think, the hardest part of team building.

They can finish in 3rd.

It's a two way race between MIL and CIN. They both have proven studs and young up and comers.

MIL has legit, proven hitters in their lineup.. Braun, Weeks, Hart, Aramis Ramirez, Lucroy, Alex Gonzalez. Then a guy like Gamel who could break out

CIN has proven guys Votto, Bruce, Stubbs, Phillips, Rolen. Then youngsters like Mesoraco and Cozart. Proven guys off the bench in Hanigan and Heisey.

Not to mention both teams' staffs blow PIT out the water.

If you go back to my comment and use some context, when i said young, it was meant to mean young with talent. Like difference makers. Tabata and Alvarez have no doubt been rushed. Alvarez looked really, really bad last year coming off an OK rookie year.

Yes, it is a very young team like you said. But it doesn't mean they are talented.

how many of their regulars would start on MIL, STL, or CIN?

shoot i dont think any could start for my Cubs except McCutchen.

when Gerrit Cole & Taillon become MLB ready.

unless Alvarez turns into a productive player. They have a lot invested in him.

But their farm system had been horrible up until 3-4 years ago when they finally decided they wanted to spend money. That is why they are where they are right now. All their talent is years away(they've taken a lot of HS kids), like i said dating back to my first posts in this thread.

I do think Tavarez is the one guy who has been absurdly rushed. He's completely overmatched right now, and he might've been ruined by it.

But Pressley put up numbers close to McCutcheon's and Walker more than held his own. The question is, can they transition from mere prospects and placeholders to real players. I don't think that question has been answered yet.

Could someone change the thread subject to accurately reflect this thread?

Possibly, "Pittsburgh Pirates: Are they young? Are they talented? Can they win 85 games in 2012.

they are missing legit players in the middle of their order. 3/4/5. And they don't have any coming up on the horizon.

Tabata is still very young and could be a good leadoff guy one day. But they need Alvarez to come around to put in the middle of that order to have more flexibility with their best hitter, McCutchen. Ideally a 1 or 2 hitter. Though he has hit well in the middle of the order. He is best suited causing havoc on the bases early in the lineup.

Hmmm.... tempting. The Astros certainly suck, allowing 796 runs, an ERA of 4.51. The Orioles see that and raise to allowing 860 runs, a 4.89 ERA, and barely cracking 1000 strikeouts on the season. I'll take the O's because they are all young and surely they can't all suck THIS much, but it was truly amazing that the O's graduated four starters to the Majors in the past two seasons and every single one of them has failed spectacularly, including two guys (Matusz and Britton) who were top 10 prospects.

That could be the difference in NL vs AL. I was curious which staff you would pick. I knew Baltimore's was young, but after May I really didn't pay much attention to them.

Yeah, I still have hope that Britton, Arrieta, and Tillman turn it around. I fear that Matusz is done. Which would suck, he looked like a future ace just two years ago.

at least Dylan Bundy is supposed to be a stud.

i dont remember the last stud P BAL produced from their farm system. And it seems they have drafted a lot in recent memory.

SO many busts. I guess Erik Bedard, but prob before him, Mussina
