A good friend of mine says the same thing. I absolutely cannot condone what happened in the immediate aftermath to Bartman, but I'm an SEC fan who has been to every SEC football venue and beyond. I've seen loooots of uncivilized everywhere.

Booze and youth mixed with high emotion, and a literal unprecedented confluence of events that never happened before an will almost certainly never happen again triggered an ugly scene carried out by a minority. Never seen or heard of anything even remotely close to that ever happening before or since.

You and my friend have chosen to see this as an indictment of the Cubs and all Cub fans. That's your right. I can say all of my reasons for hating various teams vary so I can't begrudge.

I fall into the category with the OP, and I was a Cubs fan. Not a diehard MLB fan, but I've been to Wrigley and used to really wish the Cubbies could win at least a pennant. After the Bartman thing, and subsequently the documentaries about that game and its aftermath, I wish the fans of Chicago teams nothing but losses from here on out. The way the people (grown men and women, btw) treated him in the moment, and afterward, is sickening. To take a human being and squeeze him into some kind of curse narrative, then to not feel a whole lot of shame about it is beyond cruel and pathetic. There seemed to be a little empathy for him, but most would rather hold on to the curse storyline. That goes for the people interviewed in the documentaries who were sitting right next to him and were attempting to do the same thing as he did.

You're story is amazing and heroic. A documentary should be made about your courageous battle

Yeah I wonder what would happen if LSU was playing in the national championship and (i know this can't happen) a fan interfered with an LSU TD catch that would have sealed the game, and then they went on to lose. I'm sure the LSU fans would be nice and respectful. Hell the band can't even play songs now because they can't refrain from chanting "suck that tiger dick"

The fact that the postseason is a crapshoot and even the best team (which the Cubs were this regular season by far) won't win the World Series 4 out of 5 times.

But at some point in 108 years you would think they would have won at least one WS or even been to one. That is a long time with a lot of those years coming before expansion of teams. Also the fact that they are in a huge media market and can afford expensive players. It is really puzzling that they haven't won at least one.

It isn't puzzling at all. The Cubs were owned by a cheapskate idiot and a media conglomerate for a long time. They only recently entered this century in terms of scouting, front office personnel, and facilities. They chased high priced free agents and overpaid for their declining years. It is a miracle the Cubs ever contended over that time period when you look at it with a critical eye.

They were. They were in the 1910, 1918, 1929, 1932, 1935, 1938, and 1945 World Series.

No worries. You were wrong (seven times over in one post, impressive) and you're owning it.

I tend to have a different perspective on that. First of all there are many Cub fans who did not participate or do anything to be ashamed about, and I know plenty who did in the immediate aftermath blame but now do have empathy for him.

And I think after the cool down lots of folks who did blame him did feel some shame. Documentaries didn't show that they were really just looking to make the minority appear to be the majority...IMHO.

Not a fan, and I have some of the same thoughts about that fan base. A couple of differences are that they kept it on the field. Buckner. It was tough on Buckner, but he is a player who expects some vitriol for screwing up and didn't have to go into hiding. I felt like there was less vitriol in the Buckner situation partially because what happened afterwards always seemed to come in to play with Six fans. Boston also had him come back to Fenway to somewhat of a heros welcome.

Chicago fans seemed to forget for a long time that there were many more opportunities to win in that game alone, much less remember that they had another game to win it.

If Alex Gonzales was the goat of that series, I'd actually have a different viewpoint on Chicago fans

They had the best record in baseball and got swept out of the first round in 08 and probably blamed Bartman again.

most of that shite is driven by the media and and the ignorant believe what the media tells them.
the truth is the Cubs haven't won a world series in 108 years due to about 80 years of terrible ownership. Not a goat or a black cat or Bartman.
