Yet they only won two titles all those years. Kind weird.
Baseball gods are cruel. You could be the GOAT team ever assembled and an opposing pitching staff on a hot streak could dash your postseason in the first round.

Yogi. Hands down. Just look at his stats and the way contemporaries talked about him. Clutch guy, played 140+ games per season, rarely struck out, team player.
Casey Stengel on Yogi " I never play a game without my man"
Ivan is the greatest defensive catcher
Roy Campanella would have been the best ever..probably.

For baseball, Johnny Bench, and it's not close.

If you play 15% of your innings at first base I don't think you should be in the running for best defensive catcher ever.
Ivan caught far more people trying to steal in relation to his peers and all time.

and posey is probably the single greatest framer of all time which is probably more valuable

Doesn't refute how much time he spent at first base. It's a different game nowadays.
ETA: By the way, I agree on the importance of pitch framing

and i have no idea how someones defensive versatility could actually harm them in this discussion

Because we are strictly talking about catching.
Playing as many games at catcher per year as Pudge did will negatively affect you over the course of a season. Durability and how much a season wears you down is an issue here. Its a different game today. They probably would have protected Pudge much more had they known what the stats show.
ETA: Buster Posey started 120 games at catcher 1 season, lets call it 2 with one where he had 119. Pudge started 120 games at catcher...11 times.

Pudge/Bench/Berra—-no particular order. That is the list from an all around standpoint. Great leaders, hitters and defensive.

And the guy the media was comparing to Bench was AL MVP Thurman Munson.

Let us not forget that Yogi played LF for a number of seasons.

I guess I just dont really care about that and, if anything, it shows how much more athletic he is
Posted on 3/15/20 at 2:42 pm to WestCoastAg
If he had any titles, the answer would be Mauer.
The man has *half* of all batting titles ever won by a catcher, and 3 of the only 4 won outside of a wartime or deadball era.

Yogi Berra no doubt.
Prime only its unclear between: Berra, Pudge Rodriguez, Joe Mauer, Johnny Bench and Roy Campanella.

how only one person has suggested buster posey is beyond me. here are the WAR7s for every name that was seriously suggested in this thread (minus gibson who we, unfortunately, cant compare to the others)
boster posey - 46.8
johnny bench and carter - 46.2
piazza - 46.1
berra - 40
yadi - 39.5
pudge - 39.4
mauer - 37.1
poseys 2012 was also the best individual season out of all of them
WAR is a terrible stat to judge catchers

Both fangraphs and baseball references WAR arent great when comparing catchers to other, non catcher, players. But unless I missed something, it's an ok tool to use when comparing catchers amongst themselves
WARP attempts to correct the issue, but I just didnt feel like going to baseball prospectus and start digging through their stuff
