Never played Disc Golf but when I was a rabid dope smoker in the 70’s and 80’s I was a mutha fricker with a Pro model frisbee….regular trickster.

Do you go to a field and just throw? I did but I got away from it and I need to get back into that. I’m going to throw understable only then stable to learn the characteristics of throwing different types of discs and really drill fundamentals into my muscle memory. Throw nothing really hard but focus on smooth and repeating it over and over.

I try to get out to Forest Park which is close to where I live. There are a couple of younger guys who practice there. They can crush the throw.

can get a distance advantage by looking for lighter drivers.

What driver weights are you throwing?

Low 150s which gives me about 5-7 mph increase in release velocity and roughly 30-35 feet off the tee. You need to use a disc with more stability than your normal 170+ gram driver or you will turn it over, or worse yet be right on the edge so you turn it over one throw and the next you don't. I think anyone with a release velocity under 70mph which is maybe 85% of players can benefit from lighter-weight distance drivers again as long as they don't routinely play in high winds.

Another data point is all the pros use very light discs in distance competitions. Simon's ~860' throw was with a ~130g Boss.

You do lose some accuracy so I only use the "trick" with the highest-speed driver I throw. This is because even light breezes move the light disc around more but for full distance shots I just cheat a little into the wind and I won't use them if the fairway isn't wide enough to be OK landing a little left or right.

There are a lot of companies that don't make many if any lightweight discs but Innova tends to which is my preferred DD disc maker. Star plastic is one that does well with making lighter discs. Champion is OK but it usually has bubbles entrained in the plastic to lower the weight which I find means they wear fairly quickly which is the opposite of "normal" weight Champion discs.

Infinite tends to have a good selection of lighter-weight discs, some of the smaller stores tend not to stock as many. I suggest if your name isn't Eagle, Simon, Paul, Drew, or Double G try a couple out but keep in mind you will likely have to drop 1-2 on stability to keep your preferred driver flight path. Dropping to a lower-weight disc is also good for making a mold you can only sometimes turnover into one you consistently turn over because sometimes you need that big turn.

I didn't consider going this low.

Me.

There’s a really nice course 2 blocks from my house. I play a few times a month. Have 2 young boys who i can’t wait to be old enough to go play with me.

I’ve been playing since about ‘06. I also have a cousin who was/is a professional or tours. He has built/created/consulted on a lot of he courses in Louisiana/Mississippi/Texas you all play. So i get a on of free discs from him. Personally tho, as a competitor, i hate playing him because he can throw from the tee on a rope within feet from every basket. Very humbling to play against. I don’t think i’ve ever beaten him on a single hole.

eta: Anyone who religiously plays needs o get the UDisc app on their phone to track scores while playing and your course records.

I had missed the movie the PDGA just recently put out about the '21 Worlds and if you haven't seen it I think it is a good watch. I had honestly forgotten how good the FPO battle was and the shot Cat made to beat Paige on the 18th hole of the final round. While it didn't bang chains like James' shot it was still an incredible shot.

The movie starts with disc golf history and culminates on 18 at The Fort with the dual between Paul and James and the extra holes.

I have about a half acre backyard and I’ve decided to get two baskets. One for practices short approaches and one for putting. I’ll set the approach basket back in the woods a touch to add difficulty. Now I need to find a field for throwing.

I also need to get lighter discs for driving. I came out of the box thinking heavier was better but based on this thread and some other reading I’ve done I’m going to get some lighter discs.

Note the US Championship starts tomorrow. I think GK Pro has the post-round coverage this year. They have the skins match from yesterday up now.

Front 9

ETA:

Is There Jomez Coverage of the 2023 USDGC?
Yes, but it will not be free until October 19, 2023.

Until then, all condensed, next-day coverage of USDGC rounds produced by JomezPro will only be available to Disc Golf Network subscribers.

I live in a subdivision and put a basket in my front yard. I broke one window when I first started.

Yeah he’s talking about the big rip. Would’ve been there, but my nephew got married last Saturday.

I’ve been running tournaments in Mobile for 19 years. We always have a big group of players from Louisiana (New Orleans, Baton Rouge, Lafayette, etc) come for our Southside Smackdown. Always get them to bring some boudin. Such good people. Matt Orum from Mobile is 11 time champ.
