re: Who actually likes “travel ball”

Of course it's not, using a little hyperbole to point out the ridiculous criticism of Tournament baseball.
The criticisms aren't ridiculous, though, especially when put in context of the financial cost.
If your kid has legit D1 talent, then that kind of investment could be argued. That is a miniscule portion of the population. That's the primary argument (as made many times IIT) FOR travel ball. When you are honest with yourself about the likelihood of your child playing in college (or even legit high school), there aren't many real defenses of travel/tournament ball.
Teamwork, discipline, personal development, etc. are all achievable at less competitive levels (and at a significantly lower cost). That same development + a college fund is a much better gift for a child.

Same as sports at any level, so it's not an argument for travel/tourney ball specifically.

know parents with kids it now, they travel pretty damn far and beyond the weekend.
Like I said, the vast majority do not, save for the end of the year tournament. Even still, it's laughable that this bothers some people.

Putting the vast majority of that $120-150k in a 529 will do much more to benefit a child than wasting it on travel/tournament sports. And it's not binary, where your kid is on a travel team or he/she is playing video games. Lots of other options are much cheaper and will help your child over his/her lifetime, like coding, chess, music, etc. Plenty of rec sports or other individual pursuits for pure physical development.
What would you rather: your kid have a degree from Tulane or your kid with a 25% scholarship with a 5 year baseball career at Louisiana College?

It's more people pointing out the absurdity of it, which then becomes pointing out the even more absurd and irrational defenses of it. I doubt anyone is bothered, but, again, see above about the irrational defense of travel/tourney ball.

One caveat: do I own a car dealership in central or north LA?

This sucks. Absolutely sucks.

Tournament ball is simply a not so new anymore format of playing baseball. For better or worse, this is how it's done now. Same with all of the other activities mentioned earler. My daughter's dance activities were expensive, and her volleyball teams were just like Tournament baseball. And I enjoyed every minute.

Very true.

If all the parents of kids who weren't going to be able to play in high school chose, it wouldn't. Again, this is why people criticize it.

[quote]Because parents are living vicariously through their children. Travel soccer is a total scam. Half the kids aren't even good.
I second this notion. We tried out and made the local club team. It turned out to be a social circle for uppity parents. You could put together at least two teams out of the rec league that would dominate those slow flat-footed kids.

You must not have kids yet, because this is true. Tournament ball is simply a format. There are plenty of different classifications based on ability.

If your kid is a high school make the team level talent, he will absolutely not make the team freshman year and that’s pretty much it for his baseball career. So if it’s worth it for you as a parent to put your fit down and play no travel ball and have your kid not be a high school player, that’s up to you
right. thats the line they sell you. the best athletes will find their way. they always do.
It sucks, but there is no rec ball left really. It’s horrible past the age of 10 and it’s a shame

Every kid who starts at Barbe plays travel ball. Same for West Monroe. It’s not going anywhere

25+ years ago, you knew if you had a chance to play for Barbe by middle school. The very small % who had a shot were SLC all stars, and BHS almost exclusively picked from that pool (one of my friends came in from TX and made the team, but he was 6-5 and really good and ended up being a top pitcher by our senior year).
Once again, these threads are targeted at the parents of kids who aren't on that level, who delude themselves to thinking "this is how you get to play for Barbe" or "this is how you get a college scholarship" when it's not in the cards. It's all lies. Extremely expensive self delusion.

Very true, and same for many other schools. You can say the same for soccer, volleyball, basketball, cheer, dance, and many other activities as well.

Late to the party but here it goes.
First off, my daughter has dominated girls her age since she was six and now she's about to be eleven. Soccer and basketball have been her main sports.
She's in the same class as Jenny Finch's daughter. Four other girls in her class are on their travel team. They all think they are God's gift to the world. Three weeks ago they were in Oklahoma. Two weeks ago they were in Kentucky. You can't tell me the these girls will be burnt out if they are doing this much traveling as ten year olds.
Yeah I get it the girls feel good about themselves. But ultimately, it's all about the parents thinking if their kid is good enough, they could be friends with Jenny Finch.
As for my own daughter, she has her first golf tournament in June. She loves it and it's something we enjoy together. I constantly ask her if she's loves it and and I get dirty looks as if how dare I question her.

Meh...parents have lost their fricking minds when it comes to kids in sports. Everyone chasing athletic scholarship dollars and sports glory. Parent are the reason there's such a thing as travel ball.
100% this.
Parents living vicariously through their kids is the absolute worst.

That’s what we are finding out for softball and baseball Nan’s it sucks. I wish there was still rec ball that was competitive but it seems like BR is nothing but private leagues formed with cliques of teams. If you don’t know a team you are SOL.
