The 3-on-3 game has a four-person roster and is played on a half court with a 12-second shot clock with nearly continuous play. Baskets are worth one or two points, and the winner is either the first team to 21 points or the leader when the 10-minute clock expires.

A ten minute clock seems awfully short for a team sport.

Fut, I guess my real question is why is it a thing? Much less an olympic sport>

Back in the 80s, those 3 on 3 tourneys cities used to host were popular as hell and a lot of fun.

ice cube brought it to the big time, but there have been 3v3 tourneys for bball since the late 80;s.

Used to be one that traveled to every Large city, and would have a city winner.

in the midwest in the 2000s, all of the smaller towns/schools have a 3 on 3 tournament (usually in the spring) with a bunch of different age groups and they're a big fundraiser for the schools' basketball programs. usually the 4 best kids from each school would enter as a team and it was a lot of fun. i assume they still do it today.

It's now an Olympic sport iirc, and I think the DOJ is investigating the NBA for trying to throttle Ice Cube's league.
