I guess you can test drive a program , not like it and opt out. What happened to commitment on signing day

I’m not a fan of it but it’s the age of college athletics we’re living in right now, things change.

It’s helping us in basketball a lot though so I won’t complain too much

Why are these kids held to a higher standard than the coaches when it comes to commitments? Why do coaches get to move up and better their lives at will, seemingly without penalty?

People are always saying shite like "If you don't like it, leave." Then a kid leaves and everyone loses their damn minds.

I bet you are equally as outraged when coaches process players and force them to transfer

We should forever be grateful for the transfer portal.

Should have been happened. As a coach you can recruit a kid for years and then leave right before or after signing day, and now the kid is looking stupid because the next guy comes in and changes everything up.

Schools are always paying coaches to break out of their contract agreements. If you see nothing wrong with that, why bring up the issue with students?

I have found that in both college and pro, people seem to have an absurdly strong bias towards the universities/owners. It seems completely crazy in the pros to want the players to shut up and just take whatever the owners want.

Well the owners are technically their boss. So just like in the real world, you can do what the boss wants or you can quit. Let’s not pretend like these guys are abused or underpaid.

College is different. There needs to be penalties for transfers, but with certain exceptions. I’m ok with free transfer if a coach leaves or is fired, for example. Transferring closer to home if a family member is in poor health would be another. I also think there should be penalties for schools who process kids who have upheld the terms of their scholarship. There could be fair happy mediums on both sides. I just think free transfers over time will have unintended negative consequences and will be damn near impossible to police the recruiting athletes from other schools side of it.

Because coaches sign contracts that have clauses that involve paying sums of money if they break those contracts. This idea of “seemingly without penalty” is a farce. With the new transfer rules, college athletes will have more freedom of movement than any professional athlete on the planet. And with NIL, they’ll get paid while they’re doing it.

I'm forever grateful Burrow became a Tiger. However, he wasn't a portal addition. He was a graduate transfer. He earned the right to transfer by attaining his degree before coming to Baton Rouge.

Which are paid by their new employers, not by the coaches themselves. For example, Mulkey's MOI includes an unnamed amount for "negotiation and buy out of existing employment agreement."

This is exactly what I mean! There's a 3rd road too: know your worth and hold out for more value. It's much harder to replace elite players than it is to just add a new data entry clerk in the "real world". And, they just might be underpaid. Just because they make a lot already doesn't necessarily mean it's being divvied up as much in their favor as possible.

What about penalties for coaches leaving?

Schools like LSU shouldn't have to worry about finding quality players and replacing any that should want to leave
LSU is selling the mentality that if you come here we can develop you for the next level even in a 5-5 covid year

This. The same folks saying players should use their leverage do the exact same thing in their lives. They change jobs when they get a better opportunity or just want to leave. They also use job offers to get a raise from the current employer. Hypocrites

It couldn't possibly be that the universities/owners are representing the teams that the fans root for, could it? Fans will almost always side with whoever has the team's best interest at heart because fans will root for their favorite teams no matter who is wearing the jersey, unless it is the NBA.

The more college football becomes like a mini professional league, the less interested I become in it. Not because I'm mad or upset. I just don't really care for a Jr. version of the product I get with the NFL. It's why minor leagues do terribly compared to college sports almost across the board.
