Why are these kids held to a higher standard than the coaches when it comes to commitments? Why do coaches get to move up and better their lives at will, seemingly without penalty?

Because thats a good system for amateur athletic competition.

There is absolutely nothing morally wrong with the setup in theory. It's just that now it's a farm league for professional sports and a huge business, so the people in charge feel bad for the athletes.

There's no reason to feel bad for them, again, in theory, because they freely choose to participate in a century old system. Now that system is blowing itself up, but why not leave the system intact and create a separate one that's just a business?

instead of creating 2 systems, why not allow the system to evolve?

seems more practical

Name 1 coach that moves as much as basketball players, hell even football players.

Head coaches? probably can't

Position coaches don’t move on as much as players do either. Often times when they do move in it’s not a lateral move, it’s a promotion.

The problem with the transfer portal is it is dirtier than regular recruiting. There should be no blanket transfers allowed. No inter-conference transfers either.

The transfer rules need to be changed.

1 transfer with immediate eligibility if the player is a redshirt, true freshman and redshirt freshman should be allowed to transfer penalty free.

Post graduate transfer regardless of classification, without restrictions to any program.

Any other transfer is required to sit out a year without losing eligibility.

No hardship waivers shall be granted.

would you not consider a player transferring for more playing time a "promotion" of sorts?

Let me clarify, I’m not against transfers. The current setup and loose rules is bad for the integrity and purpose of collegiate athletics.

I wrote a post above which outlines what I believe should happen.

I mean if you look at viewership and attendance numbers I know I’m not alone. That attitude that college football is fine and the fans are the problem is dumb.

Unless it's more revolution than evolution, which I think is the case when you pay players and treat them as free agents.

There is absolutely nothing morally wrong with that system either, it's just not the amateur college athletics that we have had and loved for so long.

I much prefer an explicit minor leagues/major leagues system to using college as the minor leagues. I don't see why anyone (other than all of the financially-interested parties) would be in favor of doing away with the old system, but that's what we are ultimately doing.

Also, I really don't see practicality as an important issue here. We aren't building the railroad. It's just a leisure activity.

Sometimes. That’s somewhat irrelevant regardless

Virtually always. And it's entirely relevant.

What happened to commitment on signing day

when successful.coaches can buy out and double salary at nba.com or just from ovc to sec, which happened a few times at Murray St.

if you're transferring for more playing time, you're usually going from the SEC to the Sun Belt, etc., so that would be a demotion.

Of course players go the other way too

Not really true anymore

Not really.

If you are a low level sales manager at Amazon, and you leave to be head of sales at a start up or much smaller company, that’s not a demotion

Guessing you don't know what a buyout is?

letting players find their niche with one do over after at least one year in college seems right.

people find out they are never starting. or they cant do the academics.
they do jc and have another go at D1 later.
some people confirm they could be drafted by nba.
both happen.
