What's going on in CFB?

Big10 - Indiana (1st in Big10 tied with Oregon) but picked to finish 17th)
SEC - TAMU (5-1) 1st in SEC) picked to finish 10th)
ACC - SMU (1st in ACC) sole possession.
Big12 BYU (1st in the Big12) sole possession
Is this a new awakening or will they be exposed? Are we setting ourselves up for another TCU blowout losses in the playoffs or has the paradigm shifted overnight because of NIL?

Combination of Portal and NIL. Especially for SMU and Indiana. Both have lots of transfers that are contributing.

Has more to do with easier schedules for some teams.

Transfer portal has kept the top teams from stockpiling talent on the bench. Watching the Ole Miss game, i couldnt believe how many times announcer made acomment like this guy played at georgia last year, this guy transferred from florida, this guy transferred from Alabama. it really is a different world, and the days of developing a culture and program are in the past. Now its assembling a new team every year.

In the case of BYU they used the transfer portal aggressively in 2023 but deemphasized it for this year in an effort to build roster continuity and did not have a large # transferring out. Plus they may have one of the older rosters in college football because of the whole Mormon mission thing.

And FSU could be no bigger warning of what happens if you frick that strategy up

To be fair, Lane has been using the Transfer Portal for 3 years. He refined how he used it. You have to bring in people that don't hurt the culture. His first couple of years he brought in the wrong players and they had a negative effect on the team.
But almost all of those guys are multiple year transfers and not 1 year rentals.
Dart - year 3 at OM
Harris - Year 2
Peagues - Year 3
Watkins - Year 3
Ivey - Year 3
Prieskorn - Year 2
Bentley - Year 3
Dottery - Year 2
I know I'm missing some DBs that have been here multiple years.
These are the 1 year rentals
Nolen
Princely U
Amos
Paul
Wells
Wright
3 offensive lineman

Parity. Some will love it, others will not enjoy the sport as much. I doubt we'll see a 19 lsu/Bama 20 anytime soon.

The biggest explanation is while there is more parity due to the transfer portal, scheduling disparity seems to be at an all-time high this year.
Some teams you mentioned haven't played/beaten a single-ranked team all year, while others are beating themselves up in the loss column playing ranked matchups every other weekend.
We'll see in the playoffs just how real the IUs, SMUs and BYUs of the world are.

All are solid teams. But the schedules have been favorable too.
Indiana played FIU, W. Illinois and Charlotte in non-conf. They don't play Penn St or Oregon. The also didn't play Minnesota, Illinois, or Iowa who are in the second tier of Big 10 teams. They got Nebraska, Washington and Michigan at home. Additionally, they've only had one long road trip...to a bad UCLA team. If things hold, the only ranked team they will have played this year is Ohio St.
It's been a little bit of the same for SMU. They don't play Miami or Clemson. They played BYU, at home, and lost. They did play Pitt and Louisiville, which they won, but Pitt was at home.
A&M has also had a favorable schedule (not easy, but advantageous). They got Notre Dame, Missouri and LSU at home (they will also get Texas at home). The road games have been against some of the worst teams in the SEC (Miss. St, Florida, Auburn). They were flattened in the tough road game they've played (South Carolina)
Again, all are good teams. But all have favorable schedules to help.
