Didn't Arnie hit the ceromonial tee shot last year? I think he's scheduled to do it tomorrow morning.

I've always thought the crowds would help me, in a normal round, I'll have at least 1 "lost ball" that really wouldn't be lost if I had a spotter or gallery down there in the landing area. That's two strokes to my benefit right there.
You are a cool customer. I still get nervous on the first tee when three groups ae behind me and watching. Am ok after that though and usually the folks watching don't golf well. I couldn't imaging a "gallery' watching.....maybe my balls would bounce off people back into play. That could help me!

Sophandros, you heading to New Orleans this weekend with Old White?
That's one way to put it, I guess. What's with the 11:30 kickoff?

good point! I think they changed it to invite only for the ceremonial tee-shots. It used to be open to all past champions.

140-160, about 8-9 per hole on average is my guess.
i haven't played more than 3 rounds of golf in the last decade. Used to play 1-2 times per week, so i at least know what i am doing but i would be awful b/c i am so out of practice.

How often have you played under pressure, in the biggest tournament in the world, against the best of the best?
All of that will add strokes to your game.
If everyone could do it, you'd see more golfers on the tour.
This thread needs a serious dosage of Pros vs. Joes.

There is a big difference in being competivie in the biggest event in the world and breaking 90 or 100 in that event. If you change the venue to an US Open course I may tend to agree with you. But then again Tony Romo shot 81 last year in the golg digest US Open challenge. So that goes further to prove my point.
I will say this - I can not even cut it in the minor leagues of golf but if you give me three or four practice rounds at Augusta - I honestly think I can shoot in the 80s in the event itself. I will even say that if I play well, I would beat a few others in the event.
Sportingforlsu is correct that a scracth golfer can beat a tour player on a given day.

Many, many years ago I got the opportunity to play Cherry Hills CC the Monday after Andy North won the Open. I was playing my best golf at the time (6/7??)and shot something in the low 90s. Two things I still remember. I pretty much kept it in the short grass (the USGA made the rough brutal in those days)and kept it below the hole on the greens.

to put in perspective my friend played Beth Page Black in NY and shot high 70's. He is a scratch golfer, played at Colorado State and considered pursuing the tour, and still in great shape. He doesn't play as often as he used to and he still shot high 70's. He said he made 3-4 really lucky puts and got no bad breaks all round.

I grew up playing in enough Junior Golf tournaments that the first tee jitters are pretty non existent.
The pros actually say the toughest tee shot at Augusta is #13 because of how quiet and obsolete it is back there.

Probably 130.
One of the few golf courses I would drink beer while playing.

It wouldn't be near as difficult to break 100 at Augusta as it would be at the US Open course (pick one) in tournament conditions. If someone hits it long and relatively straight, they'd at least have putts for par on most holes at Augusta. The US Open courses are a different story. You have to be straight as an arrow or you're punching out of 4-inch rough all day.
I'm a 10 handicap, and if I was at the top of my game, I'd expect 100-105 at Augusta. Once I got to know the course, I'd expect to routinely break 100 there. I wouldn't ever expect to break 100 at a US Open venue.

I was in Augusta with a friend for the practice round Monday, the course is in better shape than last year, as last year it was a tad dry. It was stunning as usual. There are a few new permanently built restroom and food courts around the course. It gets better and better each year.
Lake Lanier and most of Northern Georgia are much better off now, than they've been the past few years.

After a couple practice rounds and then playing on Thursday, I think I'd have a better than average chance at breaking 100.
Double bogey on every hole would be 108 and I'd like to think I could do a little better than that.
Honest assessment:
I would be okay tee to green. I'd hit a lot of fairways and at least be around the green or on it. Once on or around the green, holy crap....The key for me breaking 100 will be avoiding 4 putts.
