Again we got lucky ourselves along the way. Pitt had to move heaven and earth to beat not only WVU but the Big East refs along the way. I also remember having to wait out the results of the Hawaii Notre Dame game in 2003.
They got in, they won, that's fine. This is about how it's a) become a sideshow more than a sport and b) that it's arse backward to look at losses before wins when trying to seperate teams.

Way to misconstrue my point, no, Alabama was not "completely out" then just it was not gonna be a cakewalk to get back into the race. You don't get points for losing, they needed help and needed to help themselves and that's what happened, that's not a slight against them that's just the fact of the matter, it is what it is don't be histrionic about it.

I'd say that last year stands out more than any other. Alabama got beat handily by an Auburn team who had 4 games total against the selected Final Four.
1-1 against Georgia (both games were lopsided)
lost to Clemson on the road early in the year.
Beat Alabama at home by 12 points and honestly, that was a big margin. I think it maybe the biggest point difference in an Auburn win over Alabama in a LONG time (just saying).
Their other loss to LSU was pretty much irrelevant. The winner of the Iron Bowl would've gone to Atlanta regardless.
basically, Alabama got in because the field was weak.
Is that their fault? No.
I just think when CBS does a 2:30 game featuring Alabama and Vanderbilt in Nashville all is not right within the South Eastern Conference. Alabama had more fans there than Vandy did. Vandy won only one fricking SEC game all year.
again, not necessarily Alabama's fault but it was a boring regular season to follow in my opinion for College Football. The playoffs were good with UGA/Oklahoma and UGA/Alabama so that was good but the road there was a snooze fest until the very end.

There hasn't been a single undeserving team to have ever made the CFP thus far. Every team that has made it has been mostly obviously top 4 and a few very arguably top 4.

Are you talking about the plane crash involving the women's basketball coach? Dude, while it was definitely tragic and sad, OSU can't use that as an excuse. They were up 24-7 against Iowa State at the half. Did they suddenly have emotion overtake them in the locker room?

Ohio State was deserving in 2016. Alabama was not deserving in 2017. Simple as that.

Thankfully the goal is to get the BEST teams into the playoffs and not the most "deserving" teams.

It's not about who deserves to be there. It's about who the best team is. And as the playoffs showed us, Alabama was the best team in college football last year. The stated goal of the committee is to get the best teams into the College Football Playoffs. I think they successfully accomplished that goal.
