The refs have been awful this year across the board, and last night exemplified it. There was an obvious penalty against bobby wagner, that the refs correctly threw the flag for:

quote:

The wording in the rule book is NEW this year and is clear. The new wording states, "May not place a hand or hands on a teammate or opponent in an attempt to jump through a gap to block an opponent's kick or apparent kick."

And then, for no explained reason at all, the flag is picked up

This is just one example of how horrendous they have been. I do not remember them being this bad before. Is it an aging crop of refs that need to be replaced?

I have an opinion - it's as if anytime you expand a rulebook of any sort, enforcement becomes difficult and inconsistent at best.

That and the additional cameras and slow motion replays magnifies everything more and more each year so it's easier to find the bad calls.

That doesnt explain how a ref saw the obvious of Wagner putting his hands on his teammates, was then convinced by someone he didnt see it, and then spent no time explaining it to the audience.

Sure, but that kind of stuff has been happening since the beginning of football.

I guess. Just seems the officiating has gotten worse to me.

I think it is the speed of the game plus an aging crop of officials that havent yet phased out.

Replacing Ed Hoculi with Ed Hoculis son didn’t help

Sean Hoculis crew currently leads the nfl in number on penalty’s called per game by a large margin I believe

Too dependent on replay

They know if they mess up the replay can bail em out

Plays like that should go to the booth or be radioed down. No reason a room full of refs can't tell the on field crew the correct call in real time.

I couldn't believe the fact that this play wasn't at least reviewed. I'm sure this group of officials will get an earful

It was baffling, aren't all turnovers supposed to be reviewed by the booth?

The Philly / Cowboys game Sunday was a shite storm

Bad calls, make up calls, phantom calls, idiotic calls.

17 total penalties

Towards the end it was every other freaking play

Refs are fixing the games, at least where they can. A significant number of major plays get penalty flags thrown on them, allowing the officials to influence the game. They can then call an inconsequential holding call on either team. They can easily add roughing the passer on any play with a QB hit involved. If offenses are having trouble, toss in some holding calls against the defense to extend a drive artificially. The games aren’t necessarily fixed for one team, but fixed to ensure a good product on the field.

This FG play was one example of fixing the game. They threw a flag, but it resulted in a big play so the refs let it slide

Everyone knows how terrible Pac-12 refs are. Shawn Hoculi was a horrible ref in the Pac-12, then got promoted to the NFL.

They cant even touch him (besides possibly an incidental graze). Not sure what gif you are watching though, the snapper goes untouched
