'86 bears

Good one. Bears also lost the NFC championship game in 1984 and 1988.

90’s Braves are a good call on the surface but not so much when you take a deeper look. They ran into some real buzzsaws that were torching every team in their path. They highlight just how hard it is to win a championship. To win it all you have to be elite AND get some luck along the way in terms of matchups and the timing of those matchups.

The 1980 Pitt team had four future NFL Hall of Famers. They also lost as the #1 team in the country in 1981 and 1982.

If Pitt could have managed another national title or two in the Dorsett-Marino years (to go along with ‘76), the teams of that era (and the program as a whole) would have more historical relevance

Few people know there was a 6-7 years stretch when Pitt was about as good as anyone. They just couldn’t cash in.

Sure. Add the 2001 Mariners as well. Crazy they have never been to a WS.

The Braves may have only won 1 World Series but they played in 5. Some bad luck in a couple of loses too.

The 80s Mets only got to 1 World Series, with all the talent they had, that’s underachieving.

The Bills lost 4 straight SB, considering no one else has gotten to 4 straight I have a hard time calling them “underachievers” they probably should have beat the Giants but the 91 Redskins and 92-93 Cowboys were better teams.

The 1985 Bears are still considered by many as the GOAT NFL team. The 86 team actually had a statistically better defense but they never even made the NFCCG again. That’s underachieving
ETA the 84 Bears made the NFCCG, still only 2 CCG with that team
Damn forgot they made the CCG in 88 still 1 SB appearance 3 NFCCG with 2 of those beat downs by SF

That 11 saints offense was so nasty. I think they could’ve beaten NE. Same for 18. That Super Bowl was atrocious and I think it would’ve been a coin flip with the Pats.

Current Nuggets could qualify too with the best player and best starting 5 in the NBA but a dogshit bench and Murray injuries have kept them from more titles.

Disagree on Bills

Minnesota, Denver, and Buffalo all got to the Super Bowl for one reason.

Their stadiums were outdoors. To beat them in playoffs, you usually had to play them in January, outside. Big advantage.

They were 11-1 both years. In 1980 their loss was at @ FSU who finished regular season #2. In 1980 they are probably screwed with the BCS but a 4 team playoff they are in both years, so who knows.

They didn't fall off a cliff immediately after Buddy left but just slowly got worse with injuries and then worse and before you had turned around this Super Team was mediocre and fans wanted Ditka fired.

That's who beat the '85 Bears....the Bears themselves.

All of those teams won CCG on the road during the stretch of multiple Super Bowls. They lost those SB because they played better teams.

A Brady Brees SB matchup would certainly have brought in better ratings

The 90s Atlanta Braves is the right answer, with the 1997 team in particular being the poster child for choking when it mattered most.

In hockey, the late 90s/early 2000s st louis blues could have easily won multiple cups, but they never even made one finals.

THE JUDGE era Yankees had two chips stolen in 2017 and 2018 by cheaters. Win those two and the landscape of baseball is completely different.

Your team is a disgrace to baseball and Altuve should be in prison.

For what exactly? He’s actually didn’t participate in the trash can banging but regardless it’s not illegal.
