You're incredibly stupid. Besides catcher you can be pretty dumb and easily play baseball. What exactly are you having to process? There is plenty of information on tendencies for a pitcher or hitter out there but most guys don't really embrace that. What is an example of a stupid mistake you could cause the other team to make? Something like throwing the ball over the first baseman's head isn't a mental mistake.

IMO, you are either a college HC or pro HC and it all depends on a coach's personality and Saban is not cut out to be a pro coach. Of course there are exceptions, but I doubt your reasoning is why he went back to the college game.

Of all three team sports, baseball is the most individualized. Being a good student is more of an individual accomplishment so I think it is just the mindset a person has that allows them to be more successful.

Just think about everything involved in just a single play in football. There has to be successful communication and not only do you have to account for your own awareness, but for the other 10 guys on your side as well.

I will admit, I am speaking from a fan's perspective, but I just think football is more complex than the other two sports and I would put basketball second simply because it is more team oriented.

What moves are you planning to employ?

I'd say the toughest "mental" situations in baseball are:

1. Catching generally.
2. Batting
3. Baserunning

Everything else you're so specialized at every position that there are a relatively finite list of things you are asked to do in the field in any given situation, and a huge amount of the decision making can be made and thought through before the pitcher puts the ball in play.

Wait what? Are you saying Southern has a bunch of big dumb athletes and that's why they lose a lot? Do you even keep up with Southern baseball? I barely keep up with LSU baseball so I don't really keep up with Southern either, but I think they went into the SWAC tournament on a 17 game winning streak.

If you are going to argue the statement you made about not taking the dumb more athletic kids you need to specify what level you are talking about. Clearly the kids at Southern are not the more athletic because they don't have the facilities along with the recruiting tools other schools have, but am thinking baseball was the only sport you was able to play so you are trying to make yourself feel better by arguing it takes a smarter person to play.

What I like about baseball is you don't have to be extremely smart to play it but if a guy is really smart it shows. I'm not sure what year it was but Jeter made the most heads up play I think iv ever seen. It was in the playoffs and there was a guy on second. The batter hit a ground ball up the middle that he cut off 10 feet past the dirt and without looking flipped a 3 or 4 hopper into home. Of course the guy on second tried to pull a fast one and was out by a mile at home. I really like plays like that.

played baseball and basketball in high school at 5A school. Turned down the football coach in high school in order to work out for the others. No, I wasn't a pro athlete.

Overall, football no doubt

But MLB pitchers and catchers are right up there with QBs and O linemen

Not going to go through everything in baseball but there are numerous:

-can fake a throw to one base if bobble a ball, then catch another runner sleeping and throw him out

-yes a lot of things defensively are done by going through the situations in your head before each pitch to know what to do if it is grounder to me, fly ball to me, grounder or fly ball other side of the field, etc. Dumb kids/teams usually fall asleep with that and make lots of mental errors

-numerous baserunning things...inducing throws on purpose. Things to look for to steal home. Reading a pitcher to get better leads, jumps. Dumb team won't hit cut off man and can get other base runner to advance, etc. etc

-hitting and pitching scenarios due to the count. Adjusting fielders due to the count in some situations. Adjustments due to hitter, adjustments due to what pitcher is on mound, etc. etc

have a runner on 2nd. Against a dumb team, bunt with baserunner at 2nd getting a good jump and don't stop. 3rd baseman throws to first and first basemen isn't heads up quickly and runner scores and they are left wondering what happened. Yes when they get old enough some of those things won't work

Baserunners distracting pitchers. Any good baserunner is a master at disrupting the pitchers rhythm and divert his attention from the batter, forcing him to make bad pitches. Baserunners also put pressure on a defense to make plays. Very comparable to a pass rusher forcing a QB to make mistakes IMO.

football by far

baseball there are no plays. Just scenarios. Pitchers need to be smart, however.

Basketball you can have the IQ of a sponge and still be successful

It is all relative.

For every Brilliant QB like Manning, there is a guy that gets by on being 100 a pure athletic monster

For every brilliant catcher there is a Manny Ramirez.

Beat metro chess. But football easily, the terminology is ridiculous. Presnap reads on both sides, adjustments on the ball, what to do during broken plays. 11 players on th field. Just so much more than ability makes a great nfl player

Totally anecdotal but the dumbest (along with meanest, most purposely offensive, etc.) athletes I have ever know have all been baseball players.
