I was never a fan of NLU moving up in '94.
I hear this a lot, but in the couple years leading up to the move, NLU beat Kentucky and Mississippi State and led Missouri in the final minute. NLU 1994 looked more likely to be successful than Boise State in 1997, for example. There really were no clues that ULM would end up being so perennially bad at football.

Obviously Boise State gets more financial support than NLU so I think that is one reason they have done better in the post Div 1 move. NLU and now ULM has never gotten the booster money to compete with really anyone in Div 1. A lot of that has to do with winning. I imagine that 2012 did wonders for money coming into the university and probably enrollment too. Plus, and for what reason I can't understand. ULM takes a ton of risks on JUCO's that never pan out instead of recruiting and investing in the talent pool in NE LA. I have always said that if ULM would circle the wagons in this region and take the kids that can't get into LSU or TCU or Alabama and the ones that want to stay home, they would have much better success and probably lure the fanbases of the high schools they played at into coming into Malone.

There is a TON of trash right now in Conference USA, but the top of C-USA is better than anything the Sun Belt can produce.

Totally agree with this. Neither NLU or USL should have moved up. They will never get in a major conference. NLU'a stadium was packed during the playoff runs of the late 80's

Probably so but App state and Arkansas state aren't far behind.

Troy seems to back too

App State, sure though most years I think they would finish between 2-4 in CUSA East and make a run at the division title on occasion. Arkansas St on the other hand is 2-11 against FBS schools outside of the Sun Belt the past three seasons. I think they would be a mid-tier CUSA team with a shot at a bowl game every few years.

Agree, the AAC will be even better this year depth wise and parity. They finished better than the Big 12 last year and can make an arguement for being a P5 conference with their wins over many strong P5 schools.

the money games are a vicious cycle... And when you win one, its usually a fluke. The smarter programs are finding money games they can win more consistently

Houston will be worse, UCF will be better, USF should be fine if not better with awesome QB, Navy is navy, SMU will be better, Tulsa will be awesome and temple will regress.

Still a really fun conference this year

AAC would be even better if they'd invite LaTech

I think on the field and on the court Tech could hold their own. The thing holding Tech back is $$$$$$$. Double your athletic budget and endowment and you could get a seat at the table. Where you sit now with a low budget, small TV audience, and good but not great academics you don't add anything other than a Bowl win and some RPI points. Those don't get University presidents excited.

I have no idea what the thought process was with USL moving up but I really think NLU moved up because Tech did and back then there was a serious arms race between the 2 since they did meet on the field every year. I just don't think the AD at NLU in 1994 was wearing his thinking cap or looked at his crystal ball to see the ramifications of a small tier Div 1 school at best being able to handle the beatings that a SEC or Big XII school could unleash on the depth of small tier school. The only reason is money since those big checks cover the rest of the athletic program. I get that. It sucks, but I get it and it's not like they are going to move down now. The only thing ULM can do is pray they stay healthy and maybe win a big game like they did in 2012 to get fans, boosters, potential recruits, and the school admin interested in the football program.

When Division 1 split in 1982?!? USL stayed in 1A as an independent before joining the Big West Conference in the early 90's. They were never a 1AA (FCS) program.

Did you play at USL in the 90's? Good friend of mine played for them in the early 90's.

No, I did not. In the early 90's I only played football in the schoolyard or backyard. I hadn't moved to playing under the lights until the late 90's early 2000's. Didn't play a snap in college until W's second term.

Those games between NLU and Tech in the 80s were great. Even the ladies roundball was great with teams being ranked so high nationally.

This right here. NLULM thinks if Tech has one, they need one, too.

You're missing the contender for this season yet your post is still true.
