This was a staple in the old days, from distances that would be beyond the 3 point arc today. Now it's nonexistent except for an occasional jump hook in the lane.

Plenty of players use a hook shot.

Are you talking more like Kareem's skyhook? B/c if you are you kind of need to have a certain body type for that to work. Hardly anyone has ever been able to do that shot like him.

Because defenders got taller? Or the center became obsolete?

Who was making hook shots from 25 feet?

I'm sure this happened all the time with great efficiency.

Not really.

Kareem just made it indefensible because of his size and length.

But for anyone trying to score over LeBron or whomever...your best bet would be the hook as you put a body, distance and a high arching ball between you and your defender.

So hook is actually a great weapon for medium-sized white guys. Go to your rec league, try it out.

Hook shots are great specifically so you can shoot over taller defenders. Also just because there aren't any great Centers(Yao Oden Bynum Bogut all ruined by injury)

Efficiency mostly.

Most people don't take those range of shots anymore 6-10 feet-- because they're relatively low value per weighted shot.

Yes, its virtually impossible to defend, but the efficiency trade off for it vs. other medium 2s is not great enough to justify its wider use.

His style skyhook reminds me of how effective Dirk's jump shot/fadeaway has been in his career. You need the certain body, length, etc..to be able to do both effectively, but if you have it they are unstoppable.

Marc Gasol has a good hook shot.

So does his older sister, Pau.

Guess you don't watch Marc Gasol, though he has gone away from it as time goes on.

Coaches don't know how to do it so its not taught.

Most of the players can't even make 83% of free throws.

It's a great shot.... Tough to defend..... But these days the guy at the point is athletic enough to drop down and stuff the wind up.

I have absolutely no game what so ever. When I play pick up games for the exercise my only valid weapon is to back somebody down and throw up 8 foot left handed hooks.
