Ruston has a clique of good ole boy boosters who run off any coach that doesnt kowtow to them. Nobody decent wants to coach there under those conditions.

North LA will start claiming Eunice as theirs to maintain relevance.

The question is, why isn't Ouachita better? They have access to the athletes. They are the sleeping giant in my opinion, waiting on the right coach and the right system to turn them into a juggernaut.

Richwood took the thoroughbreads after Vallery left for Kilgore in 95. Granted that’s been 23 years ago, but the athletes are now split all around the Monroe area. Sterlington is now reaping the benefits of a good bit of population shift away from the Eastern side of Ouachita Parish.

The people who ran those programs are dead and gone, Shows, Brown, Childress.

less athletic demographics compared to south LA

I always said, per capita, North Louisiana was better, but I left West Monroe in 2005, so I don't know how it is today?

Ruston has an enrollment somewhere around 1300. West Monroe has about a 800 more students. I don’t know how but they do

West Monroe has always drawn their students from the parish, not just the city. There was 2000 students at WMHS when I was there in the late 80s and that was before West Ouachita was built.

Building the new Richwood High School killed them.

pened to Ruston football?

True, but Ruston use to have some damn good athletes back in the day. The kinda stuff you aren’t teaching in high school football. They have a few guys here and there that play college but not in the #s they use to. You’d figure even with inferior coaching they’d still push out some really good athletes, the area use to produce, now it doesn’t. I’m speaking strictly Ruston, not WM
I think football changed and some of those programs didn't...
The socio economic demographics that made ruston great(along with a great stable staff) has changed in Ruston and Lincoln parish as a whole - much like what has gone on in some other areas.... and the people left are playing less football......

I’ve been told this by a few people but never knew how true it was. I’ve heard some of the best athletes were backups to other kids whose parents had money. Or some of the best athletes in the school are not playing football. I just never knew if that was true

A buddy of mine who played for 1990 RHS team said Childress would roam the halls getting track stars and big mofos who didn’t wanna play, he’d talk them all into playing and didn’t care about booster club members. But I wasn’t sure that the coaches since him weren’t the same way or not.

Steroids with the corn fed population, as well as holding kids back, isn’t as cool as it used to be.

Case in point. This happened to one of the coaches between Childress and the guy they have now. It was understood that the coach got to keep the revenue from the coke machines in the gym as an under the table bonus. Shady, but it had been going on since Childress. Well, the new coach pissed somebody off and they threatened to go to the school board about it. He said frick this and resigned. He had won a state championship at another school and would have done well at Ruston.
