re: What did LaDainian Tomlinson lack to not be considered among the elite RB's of all-time?

He is considered a great back but the NFL has evolved into a passing league and most don't remember one great season.

long enough? You act like he's Terrell Davis. LaDainian was a staple and household name for years.

He had more than one great season and it wasn't that long ago. Not like it took place in 80's or 90's.

Yeah that was my bad. I didn't realize he had 8- 1,000+ seasons in a row. I guess I was just thinking how fast he fell off after that.

You can say he and AP are the two best backs of the 2000s, and you would be correct.

Well he was great too.

I understand this... the dude was a beast... his problem was that he played in San Diego....

He was incredible. Unfortunately, he put up a ton of those stats against Denver. That SD Chargers offense with him, along with the others, was nearly unstoppable at times.
Definitely one of the GOATs.

He didn't do it at an elite level long enough to be considered elite elite.
LT definitely did. His run from 2001 to 2007 was incredible.

The biggest game of his career. That's why.

Damned if he played, damned if he didn't play.
Guy had a hurt knee and (1) didn't want to risk his future (2) didn't feel like he would be as good as the next guy up.

He's not on the Gayle Sanders, Jim Brown, Walter Payton, or Earl Campbell level. I'd put him a little ahead of Marshal Faulk and about the same level as Adrian Peterson.

The only thing that really puts those people on a "higher level" was the time that they played. Their place in the history of the game puts them in a revered field that really has nothing to do with on the field ability.
What set LT apart was that he could do everything at a high level, receiving, power, finesse, vision. He wasn't the best ever at any of those, but he may have been the most balanced rb ever. Maybe that's another thing, besides era, that makes people think about him less. He wasn't the king of any one skill set.
For a period LT was the Chargers offense. It was stupid how they used him, but he was so good that it didn't matter that it was totally predictable.

All I remembered hearing while he was playing, was he was the best and had the best chance of breaking all the records.

Playing in SD was his biggest problem. Maybe another thing that works against him is he played in the pass happy era, and running backs have been mostly overlooked and ignored, with receivers and qb's getting more love.

he's the second best RB of the 2000s IMO. one could argue he is the best of the era.
eta: i loved watching him throw for TDs.
