MLB: Yankees/Dodgers? Yankees/Cardinals? Yankees/Sox? Yankees/Cubs?
NFL: Steelers/Cowboys? (fairly confident this mirrors Lakers/Celtics)
NBA: Lakers/Celtics (easiest and most obvious)
CFB: (USC/Notre Dame? Alabama/USC? Alabama/Notre Dame? Michigan/Ohio State?)
Hockey: Montreal/Detroit?
NCAA BB: UNC/Kentucky?

Replace Detroit with Toronto, but if you are using valuation as a variable and need an American team, the Rangers are worth the most. Though Detroit has been more successful on the ice.

Dodgers over Cubs. Cubs were anonymous before WGN went cable.

Giants or Steelers over Packers. Bears were bigger than Packers over most of the NFL history.

UCLA over UNC. Over history, you could probably say Kentucky over Duke. Duke is kinda like the Patriots.

Some are easy. Some are harder
MLB: Yankees/Dodgers -- the Dodgers lack of World Titles in the last 30 years is troubling, but not yet enough to put them behind #3.
NFL: Patriots/Cowboys -- The sheer amount of relevance and success can't be denied for the Patriots, even if its mostly a post-2000 phenomenon. The run has been every bit that dominant for closing on a generation.
NBA: Lakers/Celtics
CFB: Alabama and USC -- this is easily the most difficult, aside from college basketball; both sports the perception is going to be shaped by the region.
Hockey: Toronto/Montreal
NCAA BB: Duke/Kentucky ; you can flip in UNC or Kansas for either, without there being too strenuous an argument.

I think if I went to China and tried to explain what American sport is...
CFB would be Notre Dame (they haven't won much of late but their flame still burns bright)
(There was a story of a USC grad - japanese - who had a POW Notre Dame grad and noticed his ring and after a Japanese soldier stole his ND grad ring, the Japenese officer ordered the soldier to give it back to him...saying that he remembered him running all over USC in a 1934 football game and that as a USC grad, he would treat the ND soldier with the utmost respect. And he gave the ring back to the Notre Dame player and protected him throughout the war.
NBA would be Lakers (just beating out the Celtics)
NFL would be the Steelers
Hockey would be Detroit
CBB would be Kentucky (Duke would be close with recent ESPN love)

I would say the Dodgers are the second most famous franchise in baseball. They were the franchise that broke the color barrier and also played a major role in MLB's expansion to West Coast markets after they moved to LA. If there was one large encyclopedic book about the history of MLB, they would be the second most mentioned franchise after the Yankees. Also, I would say the Packers are more famous than the Steelers. They are very well-known for Lambeau Field, Vince Lombardi, being called Titletown USA for having the most championships and are the only community owned sports franchise in North America. And in college football, the two most famous programs are obvious. It's Notre Dame and Alabama.

The Raiders are famous in spite of their extended suckage.

I know. Is there a worse famous team in history?

You guys need to look at the history of college B-ball
UCLA is tops. The next is Indiana, Kentucky or UNC.
John Wooden. Lew Alcindor, Bill Walton. The greatest college basketball game ever played was UofH bearing UCLA in the Astrodome.
