I thought the topic title said most famous, not best or most storied. The Leafs have a huge fanbase even outside Toronto, just like the Cubs were before they finally broke through.

Greatest college game, IMO, is NC State beating UH at the buzzer and Jimmy V running out on the floor

Doesn't matter. English speaking Canada revolves around the Leafs and the Habs are the Habs. The NHL is interesting because every one of the Original 6 teams are steeped in tradition. You could make a case for the Rangers, Bruins, Red Wings, and Blackhawks too.

Yankees and Dodgers is clear cut.
As is Celtics and Lakers
NFL is probably Dallas and Giants/Packers/Bears- close
NHL is Montreal and probably Toronto.

CBB is definitely UCLA.
NHL is definitely Toronto over Detroit.
NFL the Giants would be over the Steelers.

If we're talking worldwide fame, then the Red Wings have to be top 3 between the Russian Five in the 90's and numerous Swedes in the last decade.

Absolutely.
Anyone saying an other team besides Pittsburg (other than the cowboys) hasn’t lived in the eastern time zone. The Steelers are massive.

a. And in college football, the two most famous programs are obvious. It's Notre Dame and Alabama.
Not obvious at all. Success doesn't mean famous in all respects. Just as Stewart Mandel proved that nobody knew the Georgia helmet in a Montana bar. They thought it was Grambling. Some schools remain regional.
I was in Europe for a year abroad in 1992 for school and nobody knew Alabama apart from the movie Mississippi Burning.
But they knew Michigan...the helmets and they knew the USC Song girls and OJ.

The Trojans lead the NFL with 219 all-time Pro Bowl selections, 48 more than Notre Dame, the next team on the list. USC and the Irish each have 12 Pro Football Hall of Famers. No other school has more than nine. These two factors separate the Trojans from the rest of the pack.
Overall, Southern Cal has has sent 483 players to the pros. That’s good for second all-time behind Notre Dame. USC’s dominance continues to this day. There currently are 55 former Trojans active in the NFL. Florida State, No. 1 in that category, has 56 active players.
I think Notre Dame is clearly #1 in terms of public perception whether reality or not.
USC, Ohio State, Alabama and Oklahoma can all lay claim to #2.
Nebraska doesn't make the cut.

Alabama football is famous as it gets. Thanks Bear. Anyone saying otherwise is prolly a LSU fan lol
Especially add in what Bama has done recently, and they own college football and it’s not even close. Some younger fans prolly don’t even know who Notre Dame is, and I’m being serious.

Not in comparison to Notre Dame over time and nationally. The Catholic connection is undeniable.
