A great nickname comes early and is used interchangeably with the players name.
Honey Badger is a great example. It was organic, Mathieu didn't even necessarily like it when it first came out, but it was so fitting he accepted it.
The Big Hurt is another good one.
Some others just seemed forced.

“Pistol” Pete
“The Fridge”
Don “The Hit Man” Mattingly
Jason “White Chocolate” Williams
I always liked when they nicknamed a group.
Like the Dome Patrol, Big Blue Wrecking Crew, but my favorite is the Jets, Sack Exchange.

There's only one athlete who deserved The Hitman nickname and he didn't play baseball.

Nicknames should fall into different categories. Some are great because they are perfect descriptions of the player. Some are great because they are unique and creative.
My favorites are the ones that become so ubiquitous that the nickname becomes their name, and creates a mystique that otherwise may not exist.
Dennis Boyd, Ed Jones, James Hunter, and Richard Lane are generic names and easily forgettable. Many of us are too young to have see them play, but we all know them because of their names.
Oil Can Boyd
Too Tall Jones
Catfish Hunter
Night Train Lane

Earl Monroe was so good, he had three nicknames.
The white media, who love nicknames that rhyme, called him "Earl the Pearl".
Black fans called him "Magic" (pre-Magic Johnson), or "Black Jesus"
