I think the 8 team bracket you’ve got is fun, but I don’t think that’s how one would work.

All 5 P5 conference champions would get it, plus the highest ranked G5 champion, followed by 2 at large teams.

#1 LSU (SEC) vs #8 Cincinnati (G5)
#4 Georgia (At Large) vs #5 Alabama

#2. Ohio St (B10) vs #7 Chokelahoma (B12)
#3 Clemson (ACC) vs #6 Oregon (P12)

This is “if it started today”. There’s still 2 weeks of games left and conference championships to be played.

Conference championship games would effectively become “play-in” games, which means that on the last week or so of the season, so many more teams have a shot at getting in.

Pre-Tua injury, there is easily a scenario where Bama would be sitting outside of the top 4 and would have a great shot at winning it all. The same could be said for Oklahoma. UGA would potentially be an 8 seed if they won out and lost the SEC championship game, and I think they have the talent to play with anyone in the country.

If you go 8 I think you need to go with every power 5 champ regardless of record gets in. Like the automatic bids in CBB this puts more prestige on winning your conference first. Three at large to be selected by committee.

Because usually a state university has finals week and then commencement and then the entire university shuts down for the rest of the calendar year as a matter of state law, and anything after the second week of December is too close to the semifinal bowl games for so many travel plans to be executed.

I think the inconvenient truth here is that if we’re going to expand to 8, the regular season has to end before thanksgiving, eliminating the regular season bye week.

They said that expanding to four had too many obstacles, but they were lying. Expanding to eight has too many obstacles.

Well, there's two of them now. So they could still have a bye week. That solves one problem.

I still like 6. 6 gives you the ability to catch those teams on the fringe that are probably deserving but still preserve the importance of the regular season.

Power 5 CC ranked in top ten get auto bids. That should leave you with 1 or 2 at large spots. That allows you flexibility. It sucks for UGA that your reward for winning your division is to have to go play the #1 team in the country while Bama can sit at home and not have to expose themselves to potentially playing their way out of a championship. That just doesn’t sit right with me. 6 teams gives you flexibility.

Expanding to 8 would be easy.

This year the semi-finals are already scheduled for Dec. 28th, with the final for Jan. 13th.

That's 16 days in between... easy enough to play the first round on Dec. 28th at home stadiums, then the semi-finals on Jan. 4th a week later in the big bowl games. Then the final on Jan. 13th as scheduled.

If they are really worried about encroaching on the NFL on Jan. 4th, play them on Friday instead.

Expanding to 16 gets to be too long and would require a game at the end of the regular season.

Clemson.

They're the only team to not have to play any remotely threatening team all year long.

I think you might not realize how thick a piece of red tape it is that many state universities shut down before Christmas.

Dec. 28th is after Christmas. The first-round games are already scheduled for that day, this year at least.

Every major university would be happy as hell to host a home playoff game. That's a LOT of $$$ for the university and the local economy. It's not like they would need to open up the admissions office and chemisty labs, etc.

6. Top 2 get byes. 3 & 4 home field.

If I was LSU and went 13-0 id be pissed that my reward is a top 8 opponent.

But you might have to open up a few state senate chambers. Good luck with that with fewer than 12 years' notice.
