Hard to tell the difference between a zone read and an RPO based around the same action but with a pass option.

Well one has a pass option and the other is basically a neo-play action off the zone-read.

And, just like with other play actions, you can incorporate a QB run into the options, but it's not required (which is what I think OP was arguing).

Geno Smith was spamming RPOs without running much back in like 2011.

One RPO that LSU needs to kill is the play where RB runs through the B gap left, TE is pulling/motioning left, and Daniels bootlegs left. It got blown up at the goal line against FSU and it didn't work against Grambling. The play only works if the defense sells out to stop the RB. Well, all eyes are on Daniels so the only opening is to hand the ball off for probably 2-3 yards.

They don't need to scrap the play, its really good play when run in the right situation. They do need to stop running it when they don't have numbers though. The only way it works is if we can put a single defender in a bind by making him choose between covering Mason or tackling JD. When it fails its because we run it into a look where there are enough defenders to both cover Mason and tackle Jayden. I have not watched any film but I'd imagine that Jayden should give some of these to the RB given that there are so many defenders waiting on him and Mason.

There is also the “PRO” version where the QB makes one pass read and regardless of coverage runs a QB draw.

zone read is reading back side DE then handoff if he stays and pull out and take off off tackle if he crashes down.

we run vertical and horizontal RPOS. do your read. if they are playing run you throw..if they have the pass covered you hand off. yes some QB's do run off the RPO but most do not.

denbrok runs a shite ton of these to the TE

Run Pass Option meaning it can be a run or pass, with the run being by the qb or the rb you moron.

RPO should be illegal. Offensive lineman shouldn’t be able to fire off the line 3 yards on a pass play.

That’s not an RPO issue, that’s just a rule difference between college and pro. In the pros you can’t go downfield at all and they still run plenty of RPOs

The issue is more so that refs never call illegal man downfield properly even with the 3 yards rule. Auburn nearly won 2 titles this century taking advantage of that referee grey area

If I'm not mistaken I think in the NFL you can be 1 yard. But I may be mistaken.

Except it can't be a zone read because the QB can't read both the DE AND the LB/Safety. Its either a zone read OR an RPO.

Yeah idk why I said zone read, brain fart I guess. I meant a straight up inside zone to the RB.
