Bill Freehan was an 11 time All Star and 5 time Golden Glove winner. He was known as the “thinking man’s” catcher for the Tigers, He played in the late 60’s and early 70’s.

Johnathan Bench deserves it based on his baseball bunch TV series alone.

I'm pretty sure in pro baseball the catchers still call the game, not the managers.

I've always had this long-standing theory that the drop-off in American catching talent over the years has been due to the rise of popularity of football. Catchers and quarterbacks have very similar traits (arm strength, size, build, intelligence) required to be successful. All of the best athletes with those traits chose baseball over football in the '50s and '60s because baseball was king. When football started to overtake baseball in the '70s, all of those athletes stuck with football particularly with quarterback being such a glamor position. Don't think it's a coincidence that there was all of these great quarterbacks born in the early '60s (Elway, Marino, Kelly, Young) while the last great period of catchers was with catchers born during the '40s and '50s.

Good offensive catchers get moved to other positions because organizations know the clock is ticking on their knees and legs once they strap on the catcher's gear.

I don't want to embarrass any other catcher by comparing him to Johnny Bench.- Sparky Anderson

Question… are personal catchers still a thing for some pitchers???? Think Eddie Perez for Javy Lopez when Greg Maddux pitched, and I’m pretty sure Pedro had one too

The 70s were absolutely the golden age of facial hair in MLB.

True. You don't see facial hair like this very often.
