The problem with the 87-88 team is magic being at the PG spot creates such a huge mismatch. Who does Chris Paul guard on the 87-88 team? They are all huge mismatches. Meanwhile Jordan guards Paul, Olajuwon guards Duncan, and the rest are mostly interchangeable.

KD-2nd team
Steph-1st team
Kawhi-1st team
CP3-2nd team

Watch these vaginas melt when Charles throws that first elbow to their throat. Different game back then. If they call it according to 80s standards then the 87 team would dominate. You see what Harden does when he gets fouled. AD would be on the bench hurt after the first time he got knocked to the ground .

Can’t have both Curry and Paul against that 87-88 team. I’d rather trade Paul for a legit big. But the 2016 teams were lacking in those.

Because that mismatch is much greater than the reverse.
You’re already going to have enough trouble hiding Paul, a small but good defender, on that end. Where are you also going to hide curry, a small and bad defender?
And who is playing downlow and rebounding?

How is that old team going to defend all the running and the perimeter and then the PnR when they don’t know how to play zone defense?
What are they going to do on offense when they’re getting futuristic defenses thrown at them and all they know how to do is have 4 guys stand behind the 3 point line and let MJ iso?

Cmon man. This is just as bad as the people that would say what is the 2013 team going to do when Barkley says/does mean things them.
I’m assuming we’re taking the players as they were in the year stated. 88 Barkley is still a freak athlete. 88 magic and bird are still in their primes.

He went overboard, but the 88 team is going to have some serious adjustments to make trying to play straight man on defense and playing iso style ball on offense against what the newer teams will do

People talk about how good the ‘92 Dream Team but just imagine how good the US team would have been if they had allowed pros to play in the Olympics in 1988. Larry Bird and Magic would have been at the absolute peaks of their careers instead of being retired or close to retirement like they were in ‘92. Players like Jordan and Barkley and Malone and Ewing were just as great in ‘88. And Isiah Thomas probably would have been on the team because the bad blood between him and MJ/Magic hadn’t boiled over at that point. They would have put the ‘92 team to shame.

i still think CP is on magic. its definitely a mismatch if magic gets chris in the post, but CP was still a all time great defender at that position and i think he would be effective enough since magic isnt as much of a scoring threat as he is a passing threat
If Jordan is on CP and hakeem is on timmy, that leaves what i would consider favorable matchups for 2012-2013 team. Any combination of magic, barkley and bird matching up with lebron, KD and kobe is gonna leave a mismatch for whoever has to guard KD. I wouldnt say lebron or kobe necessarily create mismatches, but i like them better than anyone left on the OP team. That would be a fun 7 game series to watch

Well yes, we’re splitting hairs here between 9, maybe 10 players that wind up in the top 30(at least) all time. There is no complete defensive answer for Durant, ever, so if he’s hot there’s nothing that can be done. And curry could get into one of his ridiculous modes as well.
Or they could both be cold because they are both largely reliant on jump shooting.
All the 88 team has to do is post up whoever curry is guarding. Either they score or pass it off to the wide open, top 20 all time player who’s man just left for a double team.
I’m more confident in that recipe being able to score consistently.

NBA has changed a lot since those days.
The true Center has been removed from the game.
If the NBA would fix it's draft rules then you might see more seasoned players come into the league. Those guys were men by the time they got to the league.
It was a lot more physical league back then too.
