About 20 years ago the Eagles were involved in an unbelievable ending. Can't remember their opponent. Offense was ahead by 5 points with 20 seconds to play. The call was to take a knee. The snap came early and the QB never got a hand on it. The defense scooped it up and ran for the game winning TD.
The Miracle at the Meadowlands, 1978.
The ball was recovered and taken in for a TD by one...

Schiano used that tactic in college. It's nothing new.
I'm all for it. I think gentlemans rules in a savages game don't make sense to be honest.
I used to punched WRs in the throat when they'd stalk block me and I'd chop down on their elbows too. The game is too damn violence to say "you can get someone hurt doing that." what are the gonna outlaw next? Tackling below the waist?
You can get someone hurt by simply playin the game.

You've lost the game, there's less than 10 seconds left. Not to mention, has anyone ever gotten the ball back in that type of situation? I've never seen one and I'd be willing to bet there is less than 2 or 3 in the last 50 years, if any. That's my only thing, what's the point? You're not getting it back.
I remember the Tenn QB fumbling the snap a while back on that play and I think it cost them the game.
shite can happen.

Reminded me of Eli tripping back in 2003
Was not as blatant as Coughlin made it sound like

He looked like a bigger fool scoring a TD and giving the Bucs the ball back with a crap load of time. They should have kicked the 20 yd FG to win the game with just a few seconds remaining.
Just like the infamous Tony Romo botched snap on a 20 yard FG in Seattle?
Always take the guaranteed points.

Huge difference, they werent taking a knee, it was a fumbled hand off.

Dude, there is a much better chance that the Bucs would have scored (They wouldve have had the ball on the 12 yd line if not for the questionable incomplete call with a chance to tie) to tie the game then they wouldve botched the FG.

I don't believe kneeldowns were permitted in the
'70s -- i.e. you had to be actually touched by a defender to be down. So to down the ball you had to hand off or do a QB sneak.

here's my thing... why don't teams kneel it from the shotgun?
Posted on 9/17/12 at 10:45 am to STEVED00
I agree. Coughlin is a total fool. What has that guy accomplished?

yes seriously
think about what the goal is on a kneeldown
if you're under center things like that happen

Nothing they did was illegal, they were just playing until the final whistle. Nothing wrong with that, IMO.

Much greater chance of having a bad snap from the shotgun.

I saw a high school game a couple of years ago where the D-lineman pushed the center back into the QB before the QB got down, and it knocked the ball out. Defense recovered. I don't really have a problem with it. Especially down 1 score. There might be a 0.0001% chance of success, but it's still more than the 0% chance you have if you just sit back and let them kneel down.

I could also see why the Bucs would violate the "gentlemen" agreement.
Is it even a "gentlemen's agreement"? In college all the QB has to do is simulate taking a knee. The ball is dead by rule and the play is over.
Anyone know the actual NFL rule on the play?

Tampa was only down by a touchdown; of course they want to force a fumble
I agree with this. If the game was out of reach then YES I would have a prob with it.

SO great coaches are incapable of every making a poor decision? The Bucs had a legit chance to send that game into OT bc the Giants scored when they did.
