Swap tebow in for vy and usc wins that game by 2tds minimum.

yeah i am wondering who would argue this point

and they didn't run the exact same system but it was similar enough to compare. it's not apples/oranges for sure

should've won by 2 TD's regardless. SC was so sloppy in that first half.

Or if one of the brothers Ting intercepts that vy floater rather than swatting it away

The 06 Rose Bowl to me wasn't as impressive as the 05 comeback vs Michigan.

Young had a game and it was his coming out party in a way to some.

It was a better game also.

VY ran by the usc defense all night. That's not something tebow was capable of.

tebow and cam were yoked

*ETA: but then there's johnny foosball

True. But Vick was also a pretty good NFL qb as well. These guys didn't have skills that translated to the pros.

Vince Young and Tommie Frazier are the two greatest big game QBs in the history of college football. And Vick was unquestionably better than Tebow. I don't remember a single game by Tebow that was as impressive as Vick's performance against Florida State in the national championship game. He was single-handedly beating FSU for three quarters before VT finally ran out of gas towards the end.

In their primes, I probably agree that VY was more dominant than Tebow as an individual player. They did it in different ways - VY would break out a 40+ yard run at any moment, Tebow would demoralize you by being unstoppable on short yardage.

As far as this whole '05 USC discussion... I'm not saying they weren't a great team, but for as revered as that team is, they weren't as dominant from beginning to end as people seem to remember. They trailed at halftime in 5 of their 13 games. Their depth and talent eventually took over in the 2nd half... but if we're comparing them to all-time great teams, those other teams had talent and depth as well.

USC 2005 was a paper tiger with possibly the best college offense of the modern era

it masked a LOT of issues (esp on D) throughout the season

primarily these guys

and it still took a superhuman performance (and a lot of USC mistakes, see above) by VY for USC to lose that game

They were basically the reverse image of 2011 LSU who might have had the best turnover creating and playmaking defense/special teams I've ever seen in college football but had major issues with their QB situation and offense.

That USC team had won 34 straight games, and won 9 of their 12 regular season games by 17+ points. They were really freaking good.

They were as good as the Miami teams of 5 years earlier.

The best CFB team I have ever seen was probably the 86 Miami team that got beat in the Fiesta Bowl.

To think that they were one yd. away from never having to see Vince wear that cape one last time.

He was very, very good, but I don't think he's the best college player ever. Cam was pretty remarkable. Herschel Walker, Bo Jackson, and my personal favorite...Tommy Frazier...are all in the conversation. Also, Bush's career at USC is right up there too.

The lateral is what caused the game to turn. I would love to know what Bush saw to lateral it.

as a hater of Texas, i am incredibly enjoying this discussion

i think the interesting point to take away is the otherwordliness of some QBs out there in the last 10 years:

Young
Newton
Manziel
Tebow

will always be spoken in a different breath than:

Troy Smith
Marcus Mariota
Jameis Winston
Sam Bradford

ETA: i know that Young isn't a Heisman winner on this list.

Mariota best QB of last 10 years in CFB IMO. If Cam would have played more than a year, then I would be inclined to say him.
