Pretty sure they can't publicly confirm his death until next of kin are notified and an official release is issued. That has nothing to do with the criminal investigation starting immediately.

ESPN did the same thing with Hernandez. They're waiting for something to become official, which will be very soon. Once that happens they'll be all over it for a month. No need for ESPN to jump the gun and then just sit around speculating at 1AM on Saturday
