Yeah and Steph Curry led the league in steals one year. Getting a lot of steals =/= being a good defender. Stockton would get abused on switches with bigger more athletic players the same way Curry does now.
dude, you're just dumb about basketball. Curry is a decent defender. And leading the league in steal for one year is not the same thing as ending one's career as the all time leader. take your head out of your rear. Did you watch Stockton play at all, much less most of his career? I bet you have no idea how tough and strong Stockton is/was.

Rick Majerus said Stockton set the best screens in the league.

Have you ever considered that if Stockton played in the modern NBA, he'd have a much higher ppg average? Stockton finished at .515 fg% for a career.

I never said Stockton was a bad player. He is one of the best PGs ever. However, I refuse to believe that could guard the likes of Harden, Westbrook, Kyrie, Booker etc in today's game. Ans that is okay but like I said I think on-ball defense is one of the most overrated aspect of a point guard's game. I would take a PG who cant defend over a PG who cant shoot in today's NBA 10 times out of 10. In terms of on-ball defense I think Stockton fare similarly to Curry just due to sheer size and lateral quickness.

The greatest PG of all-time is Walt Frazier/Isiah Thomas, both were champions, both excelled on both sides of the court, both elevated their play in the high stakes, and both could score from a wide range of areas, case closed

Stockton is consistently one of the most underrated NBA players of all time. Gary Payton is on record multiple times saying that Stockton was the hardest player in the league to stop from affecting the game.

Teams did not defend Stockton the way they defend Steph

Plus obviously when you get into eFG% it's not fricking close

Basketball strategy these days is just a question of which position can put up offensive numbers most efficiently. And the answer to that question, unequivocally, has been PG. The three-point line favors teams with guards who can fill it up

The game has changed a ton since Stockton. Maybe dropping racism accusations is unfair but if you think Stockton was a better PG than Curry you're at least holding on to out-dated conventions

At this point basketball is so positionless that calling Steph the greatest point guard of all time is kinda weird.

I think he's one of the most underrated super stars of all time though. He gets a lot of unwarranted hate from players and fans.

I'm convinced anyone who believes Stockton was a better "PG" then Steph is a fat, racist boomer who justifies his/her casual racism behind the belief that traditional pass-first PGs are superior to modern shoot-first PGs

Like anyone who's drafting a team and takes Stockton over Steph has something seriously wrong with his/her brain
I believe this take.

I give the slight edge to the 2 time MVP and 3 time NBA Champion. The guy changed the way basketball is played. He did that.

Stockton was a liability on the floor in back to back finals... people in here have no idea what they talking about... he constantly got subbed out on defensive positions when the game was on the line... Stockton was the built in mismatch... Steph way better on defense...

This is one of the dumbest statements I've ever read on this board.

Yeah, muh racism.

What a clown. We love Magic and Isiah and Stockton and Kidd because muh racists.

Okay Generation Zer.

I bet you never saw Magic, Isiah or Stockton play.

The entire premise of this thread is retarded and then the OP insults everyone's intellect by proving what a worthless Generation Z clown he is by saying Stockton was a shitty defender...

And then clowns like you come in and muh racism...your generation...

Give it a rest. We're fricking tired of your entire generation not being able to rebut a point or argument because you're too fricking stupid so you just resort to the racism card.

If ANYTHING, the OP is racist.

For assuming Stockton was a shitty defender because he was a SMALL WHITE GUY!

And we know white guys can't play basketball, right?

If it is any consolation I would say that a small black guy probably wouodnt be a good defender today either. Im also not saying Curry is a better defender than Stockton. Just thag neither one could be expected to reliably hold the better guards/forwards in the modern NBA. Or do you want to argue that Stockton is a better defender than Kawhi (who also struggles at times against the best perimeter players in the league)?
