No guard in NBA history has the kind of gravity on offense that Steph Curry has. Even though he doesnt get crazy assist numbers his ability to move without the ball and shoot from anywhere on the court has a kind of playmaking ability in itself as teams are forced to leave even his most talented teammates wide open to cover Steph. I have yet to see a team successfully slow Curry down without essentially doubling him every play.

I know some will argue his defense is poor but plenty of the best PGs of all time were poor defenders (Stockton, Nash, etc). If I am picking my team and had my choice of any PG in history I am picking Steph Curry. He can fit any scheme and make ordinary players (Think Draymond Green) look like all stars.

that's just plain retarded. Stockton was a good to great defender. all time leader in steals is impossible to be a "poor" defender. Anybody who lumps Stockton and Nash together re: defense has to be the stupidest mf ever.

Yeah and Steph Curry led the league in steals one year. Getting a lot of steals =/= being a good defender. Stockton would get abused on switches with bigger more athletic players the same way Curry does now.

If i have to watch a video as propaganda for a guy, then he isn't the greatest. I should see it with my own eyes while he's on the court.

very good player/great player, but not goat in back court of all time

Ok so who is "obviously" the greatest QB of all time because I guarantee whoever you choose will garner some dissent. What about greatest BBall player period? Is everyone in agreement it is MJ? Of course not. Only major sport I can think of that has a clearly delineated GOAT is hockey.

Steph Curry

Greatest PG of All Time

Strengths:
-elite shooter
-elite distributor
-elite penetrator (relatively speaking considering today's rules)
-elite leader-not the killer MJ and Kobe were but conducts himself in a way where his teammates fall in line when it's time for business

Weaknesses:
-average to below-average defender but his team's defensive scheme sets him up to make steals (led the league in 2016) and he executes well in that system due to elite supporting on-ball defenders
-injury history-next to his defensive deficiencies, this is his most glaring impediment. An elite player's best ability is his availability and Steph retains a rather poor injury with ankles made of papier mache and injuries to his MCL, groin, and metacarpal
-mixed bag when it comes to the high stakes series-his performance in the 2016 Finals speaks for itself, dude came up very small particularly in Game 7. Also came up small in the Finals last year, shot poorly from 3. Difficult to count on a consistent performance from him in the high stakes series and that's what matters at the end of the day. Not much comfort in a mixed bag. I mean hell the Warriors needed IGGY OF ALL PEOPLE to bail them out against a depleted Cavs squad leading them 2-1 in Cleveland in 2015.

I'm convinced anyone who believes Stockton was a better "PG" then Steph is a fat, racist boomer who justifies his/her casual racism behind the belief that traditional pass-first PGs are superior to modern shoot-first PGs

Like anyone who's drafting a team and takes Stockton over Steph has something seriously wrong with his/her brain

I want to say this is bait of some sort but I'm not sure for who. Thinking Stockton is a bad defender makes you handicapped in some way

You may want to look in the mirror when talking about someone else having something seriously wrong with their brain.

Nah, no one is seriously taking Stockton over Steph and if your only reason for insisting that Stockton is the better PG is some out-dated definition of what PGs are supposed to be, there's something else going on there

You just invalidated your entire post as if the premise wasn't absurd enough to begin with.

quote:

He made 11 All-NBA teams, more than any other point guard but Bob Cousy (12). Only Cousy, Magic Johnson and Isiah Thomas have more All-Star appearances at the point than Stockton’s 10. And just a handful had more All-Defensive selections than Stockton’s five.

He led the league in assists for nine straight seasons from 1987-96. Five of those are in the top six playmaking seasons in NBA history, including his record-setting 14.5 assists per game in 1989-90.

You accumulate some mind-numbing numbers when you are that good for that long. Stockton’s 15,806 career assists are not just a record, they are nearly 3,000 more than Jason Kidd in second. That is practically a Wayne Gretzky-level of dominance over the field when it comes to table-setting.

On defense, Stockton holds the NBA record for career steals with 3,265. In second place is Jason Kidd, with 2,684.

You know what does equal being a good defender, Stockton making the All NBA Defensive team 5 times.

Have you ever considered that if Stockton played in the modern NBA, he'd have a much higher ppg average? Stockton finished at .515 fg% for a career. That's an insane number for a guard. Stockton is consistently one of the most underrated NBA players of all time. Gary Payton is on record multiple times saying that Stockton was the hardest player in the league to stop from affecting the game.
