yeah if the ball didn't come out, it would still be live
but the ground caused the fumble. when that happens, the ball is dead upon the "fumble"

I'm sorry man. I've watched a lot of football and have never seen a play blown dead in that situation. I think the rule was clearly outlined by another poster. I'm done with this subject!
