My uncle was a bookie for fifty years in the pre-internet era. It was a true profession for him. He owned a bar to launder money but it was a zero sum venture. He never placed a bet other than to cover action.

Some of his advice/commentary

-I would have to get a job if it weren't for parlays.
-Home underdogs are your friend
-Avoid rivalry games.
-NEVER play rivalry games in which the teams are similar in talent and record.
-Notre Dame is consistently over valued.
-I would have to get a job if people only played O/U
-Never take heavy action from a guy whose wife knows he bets.
