5-0 in title games is Powerball winning stuff.

A couple of those I remember they had no business winning, Kentucky a decade ago for 1.

They beat that Duke team that had Trajan Langdon, Corey Maggette, Elton Brand, and Shane Battier. Might have been one of the top 3 Duke teams ever. UConn is nails in the final, like LSU baseball was.

Was an elite Duke team. UCONN that year was better. Wasn't luck they beat that Duke team. Was the clash everyone wanted from about midpoint of the season. Rip Hamilton, El-Amin, Voskhul, defensive wizard Ricky Moore and a slew of athletic wings/big guys that gave good minutes. Duke more talented, UCONN the better team.
Calhouns recipe of dominant lead guards, athletic shooting wings and a bunch of bigs that rebound and intimidate around the goal still works. Biggest difference is that the bigs can shoot now.

IIRC UConn was undefeated until late in the season and only lost 1 game that year. I think duke was more talented overall, but that was a great championship game.

quote]Connecticut's victory in the finals marks the biggest upset in Championship Game history in the NCAA tournament, as they were 9.5-point underdogs in the contest despite having compiled a 33–2 record going into the Championship game, including a 14–2 record in the tough Big East Conference. In fact, Connecticut had spent more weeks as the number 1 team in the country, according to the AP Top 25 Poll, than had Duke. [/quote]

In basketball there were a lot of things happening in the Big East at the time....and good hires by UConn. On the women's end they had Geno. On the men's end they hired Calhoun who had been successful everywhere he coached even as a high school coach. Calhoun also had the advantage of coaching exclusively in the NE area.... so he knew where the talent was. Also his ascent and UConn's probably had much to do with StJohn's disappearing as a national power as Lou Carnesecca got older and then retired by 1992. St John's had not been relevant since the mid 1980s and Calhoun had been trying to pilfer Long Island.

Dude just might be the GOAT coach in all sports. Has over 1000 wins and 11 national titles during his time at UConn it’s insane

It's also very close to the NYC metro area so talent should never be an issue.

They recruit nationally, theres only 2 dudes from the city on the team.

I just don't see the parity in women's basketball. Maybe someone has done the math, but the women's game doesn't come close to passing the eye test.

More than there used to be… ever since Miss St hit that buzzer beater against UConn that night

A long way to go. A 16th seed in the men's side can destroy a Number 1 seed's dream. No one is safe. Ever.

I think one of them went through A&M before getting to UConn. The women have more international players than NYC metro players.

Castle is also Hurley’s only McDonalds All American recruit ( and he’s from GA). Calhoun didn’t have a ton of McDAAs either LINK They just have done a good job in finding and coaching the right talent for their program.

Duke lost early that year to cinci. UConn's first loss was to Syracuse in February. I was half right. I didn't remember that UConn lost again a couple weeks later.
