The Miami Dolphins have chosen their quarterback for the 2020 NFL season. In a battle between veteran journeyman Ryan Fitzpatrick and first-round pick Tua Tagovailoa, the Dolphins announced on Monday they would start the season with Fitzpatrick as QB1 and the rookie from Alabama serving as the vet's primary backup.

It was always seen as a ‘not if, but when’ situation between Fitzpatrick, who is set to turn 38 this season, and Tagovailoa, based largely on Tagovailoa’s position as potentially the best quarterback in the 2020 NFL Draft and his recovery from recent injuries. Fitzpatrick could be the quarterback of the present, the reasoning went, but Tagovailoa’s quarterback of the future tag could allow him to fill in at any time.

quote:

The No. 1 dual-threat quarterback in the 247Sports Composite and a five-star prospect, Tagovailoa quickly created buzz at Alabama from those who raved about his natural ability as a passer. He relieved starter Jalen Hurts in the national championship game and led the Crimson Tide in a comeback effort to topple Georgia and win the title.

That set up a quarterback competition, with Tagovailoa prevailing and hitting on 69 percent of his passes for 3,966 yards and 43 touchdowns with just six interceptions. And he was on pace for an even bigger season as a junior — his 206.9 passer rating would have been the greatest single-season mark of all-time if he’d played more games and gotten more attempts — and he was on track to top his previous season marks in completion percentage (71.4 percent) yards and touchdown passes with a full 15-game season as he had the previous year.

But Tagovailoa’s hip injury — and the fact that NFL teams couldn’t get him in front of their doctors after everything shut down for COVID-19 concerns — kept him from serious conversations to be the No. 1 pick. NFL Network's Daniel Jeremiah said before the shutdown that the Cincinnati Bengals should consider Tagovailoa at No. 1 (they eventually went with LSU's Joe Burrow), while some others said that they would have taken Tagovailoa over Burrow if not for the injuries. Deion Sanders even chipped in that he would have taken Tagovailoa No. 1 regardless.

Tagovailoa passed the Dolphins' physical, and him sliding down draft boards for the hip injury could wind up benefitting Miami down the road, as the Dolphins were able to get one of the most efficient quarterbacks and best pure passing prospects in college football history at the No. 5 spot.

It won’t take long before Tua is the starter. Fitzpatrick could look like Tom Brady in camp but within a few games he’ll have a game where he throws 3 picks and loses the job. Back in 2018, Fitzpatrick looked liked the best QB in the league for the first three games of the season for Tampa Bay, then in the fourth game his performance collapsed and he was benched.

Remider - Patrick Mahomes was Alex Smith's backup

Before the "Tua is a bust" narrative goes too far.

Best case scenario for Tua I think.

Let him sit behind fitz for majority of the season and slowly bring him into the fold.

The narrative revolves around Tua's injury and the uncertainty it creates. If he is totally healthy and the hip wasn't a concern, he would/should be the day 1 starter. Especially if he is that special. The truth is he has been limited and they are being careful. Which justifies him falling in the draft. None of that is a knock against him. Health just matters..

No one with a brain thinks tua is a bust

No one with common sense thought he would start day 1 either

This news is entirely expected

This.

Unlike the Bengals, the Dolphins actually have a serviceable veteran to start until Tua is ready.

On the flip side, articles out of Cincinnati are going to talk about how Burrow is day one ready because, well, they don't have a choice.

Wrong. The Bengals had Andy Dalton and could have easily kept him, if they wanted Burrow to sit. Dalton is way better than Fitzpatrick. Try again..

They got rid of the veteran because they knew Burrow would start week 1

Dolphins would’ve done the same if Tua was healthy entering the offseason

If Tua’s health was as big of a concern as you seem to think, the dolphins would not have cut Josh Rosen.

This happens every year with first round QBs. Some franchises wait until later in the year to throw them in the fire. Others just toss them right in. Doesn’t seem to be a right or wrong way, if the guy has the goods to make it long term.

And everything coming out of bengals camp talks about his confidence, leadership, and total command of the offense. Especially from other players.

I never said it was a major concern at this point, simply said that if he didn’t have the injury he was coming off of, they would be much more quick in moving him along into the starting role.

I never stated any judgement about any of that or how good either guy will be in this thread.

Stop creating things to get mad about.

Seems unlikely, as he has 1 game over 4 TDs. Whereas he has 14 games with at least 3 ints.

That’s what I’m saying, Fitzpatrick may look like Tom Brady in camp or during the first few games of the season, but then he will suddenly go back to being awful. That’s what we saw happen a couple of years ago when he was playing for Tampa Bay.
