But the way I view athleticism I would switch that around. When I think of someone being athletic I think of the guy that can go shoot some buckets, makes some catches, make some throws, kick around the ball all while looking coordinated and not like a fool. Maybe he is not elite at any of the things not involved with his respective sport but he can hold his own when playing the other sports with amateurs
Completely agree with this.

So while many maybe view NBA players as the most athletic of the pro leagues, I view them lower on the spectrum than most professional leagues as far as athleticism
And this is what I disagree with. A basketball player has to essentially have some skill in every facet of fitness. All while moving around bigger frames than any other sports. To me, thats much more impressive and challenging.

Well holy shite. You're talking about a completely different alternate universe.

Edited to show I was quoting....
Here is the issue with this argument, even in soccer crazy countries every great athlete doesn't play soccer, and if they do that doesn't mean they will play at a high level. Yes, in most countries if you go back in time and take all of their top sprinters, jumpers, tennis players, baseball players, weightlifters, etc. and trained them their entire lives at soccer, those countries would be better too.
Hell, under this scenario Jamaica or some sub-sahara African country might be the dominant soccer power and still beat the US. In fact Usain Bolt might be the best striker of all time.

It's all about perspective. If you would take this group and put them into a time machine to travel back to the toddler age and let them train their entire lives at only soccer, then this would be the best team in the world. Mike Trout Andrew McCutchen Earl Thomas Odell Beckham Jr Jarvis Landry Adam Jones Manny Machado Eric Berry Darrelle Revis Jordan Burroughs Jordy Nelson Randall Cobb Tyrann Mathieu Patrick Peterson Dez Bryant Julio Jones

That's far too many words to just say: "I don't understand anything about sports and athleticism."
Posted on 6/20/16 at 3:37 pm to Teddy Ruxpin
Having endurance and speed isn't "athleticism"?

I played soccer with a dude who made state odp team, eventually played NFL wr for a few years. Younger brother played soccer with a kid who was the youngest drafted into MLS, at the time, and he flopped out of football before 16. shite varies person to person.

NOT, in the REST of the world....you must belong to the "small local/regional thinkers" club..LOL !

The hardon that fat, untraveled drunks have for soccer is amusing. Can't wait for the World Cup to hear some more bitching from Billy Bob about how it's not a real sport.
You're not kidding. I remember a thread around the last World Cup asking something to the effect of "What is more prestigious, winning the Masters or winning the World Cup?". The level of stupid on this board is astounding at times

If you cherry picked the players with the best soccer style athletic build in the NBA and NFL and gave them two years to do nothing but play soccer with elite coaches and trainers they could probably be a lower tier MLS team.
this may be the dumbest thing i've ever read on this site

Isn't Kobe pretty good at dribbling a soccer ball?

No way this thread is legit.

Right, and at the WC it required a wonder strike from the best player in the 90th minute for his team of similarly great players to beat Iran 1-0.
Soccer can be a hard sport to just wipe the floor with people, even if you're much more skilled.
The hypothetical team I'm talking would be nowhere near as skilled or overall as tactically nuanced as even the worst MLS team. But if you drilled them for two years to play to the strengths they could develop, I don't think they would just get destroyed every time
Your superteam of athletic novices would get destroyed by Iran, every time.

with one year of training on endurance and footwork the three major sports could make teams better than MLS

Which is why I place the NBA as a whole lower on the athletic spectrum than most. Although I do acknowledge that even by my definition of "athletic" that there are some supremely elite and talented athletes in the NBA

Producing better U.S. soccer players requires a better U.S. soccer development system, not better "explosive" athletes.
Thats true to a degree, but in the US the best athletes don't play soccer and that matters. It matters a lot. In your hypothetical cherry picking athletes like that I guarantee we would have a better national team. We are probably somewhere like 15-20 in the world right now. We would probably be 5-8 if our top athletes played Soccer, and if our top athletes played Soccer we would have better training and upbringing so we would probably be 1

a major problem in US soccer development is that coaches insist on kicking longballs to our most athletic players which works in youth/high school but is pretty useless against competent defenses

I very much have an idea, I promise I have just as much soccer experience as anyone on this board.
Your opinion contradicts this. It's absolutely ludicrous to think the talent necessary to be competitive in any level of pro soccer can be developed in just two years. Anyone that actually knows the game would agree.
