keep bitching about the lack of parity in college football. Isn't the portal the best way to increase parity? Schools won't be able to stockpile talent like they used to. And bad teams will be able improve and rebuild much more quickly. I'm not sure why some think this is a bad thing.
Portal increases stockpiling, not the other way around.

QB is different because it's like a goalie in hockey, only one can play at a time. Other positions you have multiple chances to get on the field as a receiver, lineman, DB, LB, etc. But there is only one QB.
You could be a great QB talent, better than 98% of QBs in the country, but if you are 1% less than the QB in front of you at your school you are sitting and will probably need to leave in order to play.

It's shortsighted and probably puts their development behind not to mention learning new systems. Sure, some may succeed but IMO most are hurting themselves in the long run. It's just immaturity but hey, now money is being thrown at immature people.
What is shortsighted is choosing where they went to school at in the first place. With a QB there are a lot of factors you have to consider:
Am I actually good enough to start? (they all think they are)
Does my coach actually think I'm good enough to start or is he just trying to get me on campus?
Even if I am good enough do I trust this coach to actually pick the best player, or is he someone who finds reasons that the best player shouldn't play at the QB position? (current starter is incumbent, "more experience, more familiar with the offense, "proven winner")
I think what you'll end up seeing is coaches with a shorter leash for QBs. I don't think you see smart coaches handle QBs the way Kirby Smart has for his career, or like Saban did with Tua behind Jalen until the second half of the last game.

If a team like Bama loses it's really good QB and doesn't have another on their roster, they'll get just a transfer QB who will come in and be experienced and ready to start the next year.

Highly rated QBs are getting out of town if they aren't starting by year 2.
I wonder how this will go over with NFL GMs who draft a QB to learn the system and be a backup for a couple of years before getting their shot

It will be damn near impossible to keep 3 scholarship QBs on a roster. And what's worse is there is no set transfer portal period like there is for NFL free agency which makes managing that position a complete nightmare for a coach

I think one factor is do you go to a school with a "QB" friendly system for 2 years then you are more ready to step in and be a stud (we'll use Burrow as an example or Hurts) in your final year before jumping to the NFL?
Is it better to start your career at OSU/USC etc. then transfer out after you lose the battle and be ready to step in somewhere and be good to go

I think you could argue that, assuming of course you don't just win the job where you're at.
If it were me, I'd try to go somewhere with a coach that has had successful college players that got into the league and were either drafted high or had success, and preferably both. Kiffin, Sarkisian, Jimbo (though with him it seems like he can get you to the league but you aren't very good/prepared once you get there

This is a stupid take…
Murray, Mayfield, Allen, Burrow, Wilson, Hurts, Fields all transferred and start for an NFL team. Y’all sound like grumpy arse old men.

Kyler Murray transferred due to horrid mismanagement by the head coach and the toxic climate he created.
Baker Mayfield was a WALK-ON who transferred due to issues with the head coach.
Josh Allen went from JUCO to Wyoming. He never transferred between FBS schools
Joe Burrow was a Graduate Transfer
Russel Wilson was a Graduate Transfer
Jalen Hurts was a Graduate Transfer
Justin Fields transferred because of issues with the head coach...and "racism"

It will further the divide between the haves and have nots, most definitely. It might also increase parity among the top 10 or 15 programs.

This.
I had a relative who decades ago was the most highly decorated athlete in the state.
He ended up at LSU as a QB but later ended up at Southeastern instead. Why? Partly because the guy in front of him was Y A Tittle, who is now an NFL HOF QB and was QB of one of the most famous pro games ever. I think it was also WWII era and he got drafted, but as good as he was he was never going to see the field while Tittle was there.
