I just think you underestimating the saints' running game. Ivory was very good and lets not forget he was only a rookie and PT should be healthy for the start of the season. The top two running backs are capable starters, and sproles has experience and is a capable running back. Ingram is a rookie who looks to be very good. but even if he doesn't do much this year, we still have 3 other guys that can get the job done. PT and Ivory were not the reason our running game was ranked 28th, them getting hurt was the reason. and if they both get hurt again look at who we have next in line. Sproles and Ingram. Last year we had bush and Betts. I'd say our running game is much better off this year

The Saints ran the ball 88 times less (last year) than 2009. So, about 6 times a game less (despite this, the offense was still number 1 in YPG). I would attribute that to injuries. I believe we would have ran the ball more if we were not injured. The likelihood that we have as big a problem with injuries at the RB position is very low.

Much imrpoved yardage-wise, but not in the turnover department. They won the Super Bowl because of the turnovers plugging a porous defense...and this past season was just the opposite. They had the fewest interceptions in the league.

That was a weakness last year. There's nothing I can say to prove that we will be better this year (at turnovers), but it is my belief we will. We addressed the D-line and LB positions over the offseason (our biggest weaknesses). We should be an improved defensive team this year. We were top 10 last year in YPG, so keep that in mind.

We also addressed our weakness in special teams by getting some more speed.

Overall, I feel we are a much better team and can be considered a favorite to win it all.

Also in 2009, PT and Mike Bell proved you only need 2 backs to have a top 10 run game. We go 4 deep. And let's not kid ourselves, the NFL is still 100% a passing league. Who are the best RBs in the NFL? CJ & AP...on 2 teams NOT contending for a super bowl this year.

What?

Then you follow with this gem...

Green Bay will be a 4 or 5 point favorite at home on opening day. That means they are 2 points better at a neutral site. Almost a push.

What's your point? You said the saints aren't in the same stratosphere as green bay. Vegas disagrees.

I don't see what is so hard to follow...

The Saints were injured last year. They limped into the playoffs, were lazy and complacent, and got smoked by a lesser team.

The Packers, meanwhile were THE MOST INJURED TEAM IN FOOTBALL!!! They beat Philly (on the road). Philly > Seattle.

Then, they smoked Atlanta. Atlanta >> Seattle.

Then they beat Chicago. Chicago >> Seattle.

The Packers are healthy. They were the best team in the NFL last year, unhealthy. Conclusion, the Packers to open the start of the season are probably the best team.

The Saints will be a better team healthy (obviously). But are they as 'elite' as GB? I say no.

I think 99% of experts would say both green bay and the saints are elite and not much separates them from who is the best. In my power rankings in yesterday's thread I had GB at 1, NO at 3. The top 8 teams in the league would all go toe to toe for 4 quarters. What your saying is there's an elite A and elite B. IMO that's completely wrong but hey, to each his own

That's not fully true, but makes more sense than hanging on to the team that won the SB two years ago.

You are seriously reaching right now. Pretty sure I could also write a 5,000 word essay on every team in the NFL on why they can't win the super bowl. To say it definitively is absurd. There are IMO 8 or 9 teams who all have legit shots at winning it all and there's no argument about it.

For the last time, they are a contender...I get it. I just think they have more holes to fill than other contenders. The black and gold fans on here are as bad as LSU fans at times...

I don't see Sproles as a true running back. I wouldn't put faith into a guy who has carried it at most, just under 6 times a game. He is a change of pace back, and a good receiver out of the backfield. I may be underestimating he effect on the game with that trait though.

Going against what I said, Green Bay survived running back injuries and won a Super Bowl. The difference was obviously defense...especially in the playoffs.

meh. I honestly don't see it. We had a top 5 defense and offense last year. We upgraded at positions we needed to upgrade. We're hungry after a bitter end to last year. Oh yah, Drew Brees.
