To be fair, comparing all atheists to Chairman Mao isn't quite fair, though I know you did it in jest...

I know. But it is equal to saying all Christians, Muslims and Jews seek to destroy the Earth.

Still a huge Dungy fan but I think he's going to far getting involved in the Ryan cussing issue. He's starting to become the NFL's Jessie Jackson, always has to be in the middle of every issue.

You're definitely one of the more clever pro-religion defenders I've encountered. You don't seem good-natured or magnanimous enough to accept such a compliment from the likes of me, however. Maybe because I'm a "faux intellectual" who hates Family Guy.

I am openly disdainful of people who show intolerance and hatred for people who have different belief systems than one's own w/o even an attempt to understand those beliefs outside of listening to horrible perversions of those religions by others who hate and seek to destroy all belief systems different from their own.

No attempt to understand those beliefs? I tried to understand. Not only did I grow up in the South where weekly church attendance was required, where my questions and doubts often made me an outcast amongst my family and friends, I attended a Christian school and took quarterly theology courses.

I tried to understand. Sorry, that the whole thing just doesn't make any damn sense. To imply that I blithely determined that organized religion was a dangerous fiction without years of internal struggle, that I just decided on a whim to be one of the cool kids and hate Jesus, is, frankly, insulting.

I find traditional religions frightening. Is it not disturbing that rational people will believe the most improbably, impossible things if put with in the guise of a religious truth? That scares the hell out of me. How did a mishmash of disjointed ramblings( some written hundreds of years after the events they purport to describe) and the ancient myths and laws of a small desert tribe come to dominate half the world? How does this not frighten people?

Deism makes perfect sense to me. It asks not that you accept anything on blind faith, but that you search for the truth, and the truth can be found within the world around you. I also believe that mankind is inherently divine and capable of great things. All the tools man needs to improve his lot are within him. He requires no divine intercession.

I'm not a "pro-religion defender" I am pro tolerance, respect, and decency. Yes there are dangerous factions who espouse dangerous beliefs w/n each religion, but I don't see that as a free pass to indict entire religions and the people who choose to follow them.

The values that someone chooses to instill in his or her own household and family is their own damn business and it's not my place to pass judgment on the choices they make if they differ from my own.

Notice that I've never injected my own religious beliefs, or lack thereof, into this conversation. It's when somebody tries to impose their own religious beliefs on me that I have a problem.

I find militant evangelical atheists just as annoying as theological evangelicals.

That's like saying "I find this arrogant, smug 'Earth is round' group just as annoying as the flat earthers who believe we should sacrifice our first-born sons to Almighty Ra every 7th year"

? You mean like those who say they hate the sin but love the sinner? I usually think those people are lying and homophobic (and/or in the closet themselves)

I don't know if it would make sense to say you were anti Mexicans but don't hate Mexicans

Since when does disagreeing with something = hating it? Just because you are against something doesn't mean you "hate" it.

Disagreeing with a concept is not hating it, true. But when one disagrees with the way that a person is wired and refuses to acknowledge that a person deserves equal rights is a sign of hatred, or at the least a sign that one feels superior to said person.

When it comes to faith, one can disagree with a religion and not hate it, but this thread has shown that there are those who have serious problems with faith in general and have a confrontational attitude towards religion or atheism, which in my opinion is not healthy. Another's beliefs do not necessarily hurt you in and of themselves. Sure, some religious people have twisted things and have done some wrong things in the name of their faith, but we should separate those actions from the faith.

When it comes to gays, that is who they are, so being opposed to gayness is the same as being opposed to gay people. Unlike faith, one does not choose his or her orientation.

Excellent post.

This thread stinks of a poli-board thread. I'm gonna shower after participating.

"Fair enough " you say, even though he will continue to walk around feeling that homosexuality is a sin, a "choice", is frowned upon by "God", etc. I just can't do that - it's intellectually dishonest.

Well what if I said, "I feel that homosexuality is morally corrupt, and anyone who doesn't agree with me is intellectually ignorant." Did I win the argument? Did I make you change your mind?

Why can't we just say that you feel the way you do, I feel the way I do, and let it go? At times we could discuss it, but just slinging mud at each other won't solve anything.

These pea-brained morons could very well set off the end of humanity and you're going to compare me to some schmuck like Tony Dungy who hates the idea of two guys fricking. Right.

Yet you compare a guy who doesn't like cussing to people who want to blow up the world.
