I KNOW! That Dallas team was clearly on the decline with Landry and the old guard leading things at the tailend, Jerry Jones and what he did to begin his ownership was absolutely necessary to revive that legendary franchise and render them 3x world champs the following decade. Tom Landry's a legendary coach and nobody's arguing against that but facts are facts yo.

That doesn't mean he's wrong. Do you think FSU should have let Bowden coach until he wanted to leave or do you think they were right to "encourage" him to retire?

Hey old man,

Why dont you find a new message board to post on? It would stand to reason that you'd be better suited discussing topics with posters your age, since your go to tactic is to say "hey I was alive and you weren't, so I'm right". But of course that would mean losing your only arguing point.

Everyone forgets that Landry was being run out of town right before Jones bought the team. Then when Jones bought it he decided it would be best to do it himself as the owner. The public didn’t like that he fired Landry day one on the job and all the sudden no one wanted him fired any more. Really bizarre how that whole thing went down, but it was necessary.

Terse and somewhat unfair history as if Landry forgot how to coach or Johnson was some Revolutiinary. Johnson went 1-15 because that was a bad Cowboys roster that Landry was coaching.

Tex Schramm was the GM ,but I'm sure Landry was no silent bystander in roster building. Johnson & Jones made the best of the Herschel Walker trade / picks , but Landry was still a damn good Football coach who was treated a bit disrespectfully.

I've been a Cowboys fan for over 35 years. While I don't disagree that it was time for Landry to go, I have a problem with how it was done. Tom Landry was an icon and deserved better than being fired on a golf course.

It wasn't that he was let go, because I agree it was time. The problem was the unceremonial way it was done. Tom Landry was the Dallas Cowboys.

Yeah...but it was one of those...we've had it so good, we're going to overreact.

Under Landry's watch, Dallas had a winning record in 20 straight years, from 1966 to 1985—a feat no other club has matched—and made five trips to the Super Bowl.

20 straight winning years and then 3 straight losing years and then bye-bye. Tanks for nuttin'.

Deal is Landry could've been winning, Jerry wanted Jimmy...buddies for life I think.

Until Jimmy won 3 Super Bowls for him (yes he won 3) - Switzer was a high-paid cheerleader. And Jimmy was gone after rebuilding.

Jones wanted control of the coach and the power. He wanted to be Al Davis...and he knew there was no way Tom Landry was going to be his bitche.

So he had to get rid of the other alpha-male. The minute you challenged Jerry, you were gone. Despite Jimmy's success, the minute he challenged Jerry's lies that he was making the drafting decisions and wasn't involved in the football operations, Jimmy was gone.

And then Jerry continued to hire lackeys for the next 20 years.

Jerry Jones' grandson went out in epic fashion Friday night, again leading his Dallas high school to a state championship while becoming the first quarterback to throw for more than 500 yards in a UIL Texas state title game.

But that was only icing on the cake for Highland Park senior John Stephen Jones in a 53-49 win over Manvel in the Class 5A Division I finale at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, the home of his grandfather's Dallas Cowboys.

Highland Park was down 49-39 with three minutes to play.

Jones, 5-foot-10, 180 pounder who has received scholarship offers from Texas Tech, Arkansas and SMU, finished with 564 yards and four touchdowns on 37-of-58 passing, capping it with a thrilling 16-yard touchdown pass to Cade Saustad with 34 seconds left. That play was only possible because of Jones' 28-yard completion on fourth-and-15 from the Manvel 39-yard line.

Landry would not get rid of players and coaches he needed to. It was time. The thing was the media broke the story before sale was complete. The Dallas Paper War was just brutal at times. That may have been first time that the media broke something they shouldn’t have about the Cowboys

I find it amazing that people give Billy Bean credit for analytics when the Cowboys were using “the computer” as early as the 70’s for drafting

John Stephen’s comeback last night was insane.

He had several 3rd and 4th and 15’s he converted including one on the game winning drive. That kid showed some freaking balls winning that game last night.

I wonder what was was going through those Manvel kids’ heads last night. This kid beat your arse under impossible circumstances and probably has a net worth more than your entire team’s families combined.

Talk about the freaking chosen one.

Tom Landry was fired on a golf course because he wouldn’t meet with Jerry after Jerry repeatedly tried to call him to the office.

So Jerry finally tracked him down on a golf course and did it there.

Also previous ownership wanted Landry fired and made it part of the sale
