Tom Izzo: I want college basketball to be a lot more like the NBA

He wants his sport to adapt, to take the current college basketball rulebook and remake it just like the NBA's -- quarters and all.
"If I was the czar for the day, I'd try to get every rule like the NBA, personally," Izzo told assembled media in Chicago. "I just think that we'd have a better working relationship."
quote:
Izzo is very much in favor of the new steps being taken, especially the shot clock going to 30, but in his mind it's still not enough in order to enhance college basketball's watchability and its connectivity to the NBA.
We'll note that a major faction of college basketball fans prefer the game to the pros for the very reasons that its styles differ from how NBA is played. Still, Izzo said he'd be up for four 10-minute quarters instead of two 20-minutes halves.
"You know, I get disappointed on the committees I'm on," Izzo said. "I think you always hear, 'Well, you don't want to be like the NBA.' Why not? That's what the kids want."

If it was more like the NBA it would be all about who has the best, most athletic players
Wisconsin and Virginia wouldn't be able to do what they do with NBA style rules.

Well, I mean that's just not true

So allow 6 steps instead of 4 before traveling is called?

I do not like that. It is him trying to gain advantages and the major schools gaining advantages. I do not like the smaller shot clock, as I feel it takes away strategy and differing styles of play.
Just my simple opinion.
ETA:
I loved the differing styles of play matching up in tournaments and regular seasons.

Grantland had a decent piece on lowering the college shot clock to 24 a few years ago.

In what way? Taking 2 20minute halves and turning it into 4 10 minute quarters is somehow more taxing on players?

The #1 reason the college game is boring to watch is because of the shot clock. It's so slow.
Possession arrow is another thing that needs to die a fiery death.

Do you think offense will be better because of a smaller clock? I do not, the scoring may go up, but the offense will not be better.

They had a 35 second shot clock. The women had a 30 second clock. Now the men have a 30 second clock. There is no reason why there cannot be a 24 second clock for the men.

Pelicans legend Kendrick Perkins
I agree with Izzo on the Quarters thing. Always thought it was stupid. Also like lowering the shot clock to 30 seconds. To me, at times, regular season college basketball can be unwatchable with how slow it is.

I actually believe it will as a result the styles of offense will be sped up and you will not get the old Carolina or Princeton back cuts set up as clean and will be basically taken away.
There will be more isolation and flooding of the sides in my opinion, which to me is boring to watch.
I like the Quarters, as long as they use the media time out at 5 instead of 4.
Again, I know I am in minority and will watch college basketball no matter what.

But, but...... the NBA sucks?

It's why I have greater appreciation for the coaches at that level who actually try to run.

Player decision making will need to be faster then.
Watching the ball get passed around the perimeter for 20 seconds each possession is obnoxious.

Is your favorite NBA coach these days Byron Scott?

Those are teams that have bad offenses. Watch the old Kentucky teams with Joe B Hall, Princeton, UCLA teams, Georgetown teams, they would not just go around perimeter.
