Last week it was the Dodgers getting mad at the Angels for bunting while down 13-0. In this edition, while beating the Twins 15-4, the White Sox Yermin Mercedes homered on a 47 mph 3-0 pitch from infielder turned blowout pitcher, Willians Astudillo

The Twins broadcasters weren't happy about it.
White Sox manager Tony LaRussa made it clear that baseball isn't meant to be fun and this won't be happening again..
For Mercedes part, it appears he has zero regerts and doesn't plan to change a damn thing. His White Sox teammate Tim Anderson posted a message of support for him on Insta

The Twins broadcasters weren't happy about it.
White Sox manager Tony LaRussa made it clear that baseball isn't meant to be fun and this won't be happening again..
quote:
Big mistake," La Russa said Tuesday. "The fact that he's a rookie, and excited, helps explain why he just was clueless. But now he's got a clue."
I took several steps from the dugout onto the field, yelling, 'Take, take, take,'" La Russa recalled. "The way he was set up it looked to me like he was going to swing.
"I was upset because that's not a time to swing 3-0. I knew the Twins knew I was upset ... He missed a 3-0 take sign. With that kind of lead that's just sportsmanship and respect for your opponent."
There will be a consequence he has to endure here within our family," the manager said. "It's a learning experience."
I'm certain that will not happen again with Yermin," La Russa said. "It's a manager's responsibility. It's a teaching moment. You want them to understand why there's a take sign in that situation...I'm absolutely certain the guy is not going to swing 3-0 in another situation."
I heard he said something like, 'I play my game.' No he doesn't. He plays the game of Major League Baseball, respects the game, respects the opponents. And he's got to respect the (take) sign
For Mercedes part, it appears he has zero regerts and doesn't plan to change a damn thing. His White Sox teammate Tim Anderson posted a message of support for him on Insta
quote:
I'm always doing Yermin," he said. "For that reason I'm here right now. For that reason you guys are talking to me right now. If I'm not Yermin, if I'm not doing that, nobody wants to talk to me, nobody wants to know what I'm doing
I'm going to play my game," Mercedes said. "I can't be another person. If I change, everything is going to change.

In the last 20 years, MLB hitters have seen 557 pitches in 3-0 counts with their teams up 10+ runs.
Yermin Mercedes was the first to swing.

Sweet fancy Moses, that's crazy.

Baseballs unwritten rules is the gayest thing in sports. No wonder interest in baseball is declining. Isn't Larussa like 95? Who gives a shite what he thinks.

who actually gives a rats arse. Don’t serve one up if you don’t want it to be pissed on.
Posted on 5/18/21 at 8:55 pm to Lsuhoohoo
I wish he would have pimped it out and thrown the bat, too

Dumb shite like this, horrendous umpires, and the Red Sox acting like the Oakland A's has basically ruined my love for baseball.

I don’t care and I’m a lowly Twins fan.
This isn’t little league. Take your beating until you can get your three outs.

Good, good. Keep murdering the last of the few sports remaining.

Great, Tony. Now explain to the rest of us why there is a take sign there. I am sure the explanation is a crock of shite, but I would love to hear it.

quote:First thing, how many fricking pitchers do teams need to have on their roster for this not to be a regular occurrence? Second thing, bringing in a position player to throw me 47mph clown balls would completely nullify the "unwritten" rule. If anything the disrespect is on the other side.

Well put in an actual pitcher. Unwritten rules in baseball are dumb. Makes these dudes seem like whiney bitches.

What a joke. The MLB has arbitration based almost entirely on stats. Why let your rookie miss an easy opportunity to improve his stats.
frick the twins announcers for their team being down 10 runs then throwing out the kid from rookie of the year after he lost his fastball. You throw a 47mph pitch anywhere near the plate, you should expect the guy to knock that shite out. That's batting practice

90s baseball didn't have pitchf/x and other great technologies to help them out.

It's a problem that old people have of conflating class with tradition. Just because it's the way it's been done, doesn't mean it's the way it has to be done. You put a fat frick position player to pitch in the game, you can get fricked.

Fair enough.
I don’t disagree with you.

I’d love to have Tony manage my team. He manages the right way.
3-0 count, game over essentially, you shouldn’t swing.

I think we could all agree to waive the unwritten rules when the other team is throwing the game to the extent they are pitching their back up catcher. LaRussa and anyone who is mad about this can get fricked.
