I'm pretty pissed I put off buying the 1970 Topps Pete Maravich rookie. Gonna be spending way more then had I just jumped on it in December

Older cards will never be able to maintain with modern one of ones. Serial #'d cards were created for this reason, to differentiate rarities instead of just spamming the market with a base set.

I get what you're saying here, but for it to really hold its value, it needs to have and maintain a demand for it. I dont think that will happen with cards that are made intentionally to be rare, made intentionally to be collected, and made intentionally to be an investment. Seems like Beanie babies to me.

Just to further illustrate how modern collecting is an absolute racket. This is from one of the break accounts I follow. Look at the absurdity of this:

5 cards in a pack for $75. That guy is charging $1,350.00 a box because there are 18 packs. Box lists for $949.00.

If people are that stupid, I may have to get in on this.

This is the pull breakdown for the box of what could be:

The only thing you’re making money from is the low serial rookie autos. That’s it. Those parallels aren’t bringing you anything longterm.

It’s a complete scam.

I cant tell if you're being stupid about this

You realize every pack at every shop you go to will be higher then the original MSRP of the box right? You think they're just going to sell the packs to only cover cost?

This has been happening for forever

I was scrolling through my buddy’s break page on FB and the other day he has a 2020 Panini Immaculate Soccer hobby box, 1 pack with 7 cards. 20 spots at $65 per.

You completely missed the point. The point is the price of the actual product. It’s so far out the mainstream. The comment isn’t about the markup. It’s about the ridiculous cost for a hobby wax box.

NBA National Treasures 4 box case (16 cards total) goes for…$14,000.00. That’s absolutely absurd. You can get just about any game used jersey for that much.

so go buy a game used jersey.

All I see on sports card forums now are people complaining and whining all day about how "it's not the same anymore I quit" It's almost as if everything doesn't change over time and this is the 1st time they have encountered such a thing. 1st step you've identified the change, good. Next you should personally make a change to keep up with the times, keep collecting the way you always have if that makes you happy, or quit. Easy enough

I lament the loss because of my kids. I’d like them to carry on the hobby but it’s complete cost prohibitive. Adults can pay whatever they want but there isn’t a spot in the hobby for children anymore.

Argue with me if you will but kids parents aren’t going to pay $25-$45 a pack of cards.

Does an auto really matter if it’s multiplied 25 times across 20 lines per year? I don’t think so.

It does to people like me. It’s all I buy.

Texas Rangers autos, either numbered or not, I browse eBay daily looking for older players and prospects.

I’m not in it for the cash though. I actually just want the card.

Go on eBay and you can get 2,000 card lots for that price. The high end is obviously cost prohibitive but there are plenty of cheap options out there.

speaking of, I just finished filling a 5,000 card box last night. Admittedly it has a lot of junk in their, but I'd say currently there is about 500 base panini recent panini products. Thinking of slowly replacing the true junk with more current base stuff then try to sell the lot of 5,000

Yeah, bro. I don’t want to pay $2,000 for a junk wax box filled with overproduced crap…with maybe a chance of getting a decent insert.

Silly me huh.

1. Limited distribution and markup resell. Regular consumers do not have access to regular wax product. Retail hanger boxes are going for $150.00 for Prizm and Select. Hobby is going for upwards of $800.00. Mega boxes are about $500.00. This is all the resell market because there are no storefronts anymore besides Walmart and Target. You’re not getting product from them because people camp outside.

Hobby boxes of 21 Prizm BB and 21 Select Football are $3k-$4.5k.

Select was $2400 on release day with FTOL at $3k. Prizm was even higher. Prices aren’t sustainable and we are already seeing cracks in the bubble.

NT is a high end product about the only thing higher is Flawless. I’ve seen many breaks on this years NT and while it is expensive I’ve seen a lot of people pulling top cards that more then pay for the box. These high end boxes are nothing more then legalized gambling.

That's partially why I quit buying boxes a long time ago. If you want an investment go buy gold or something else that isn't so volatile. Don't buy any modern cards to sell later. Only buy if it is merely a hobby to you. You are only going to be disappointed otherwise.

I quit buying sealed because 1, it's obviously gambling and a losing one, but 2, even if you do pull something amazing (like my 1/1 Ceedee Lamb auto), it'll be a redemption card that takes well over a year to receive. I redeemed my Ceedee on 4/6/20 and still have no update on when I'll get it
