Jeter is the one of 2 guys in his era to get 3,000 hits (along with Biggio).
I have a hard time saying Ripken and Gwynn, who both played their last season in 2001, were not part of the same era as Jeter. I agree that baseball is dependent on the era, but I think its closer to 4 guys with 3000 hits and 5 with 600 HR's... and 600 HR's is more rare historically.
It's close. But if Thome does it, I think it officially cements 600 HR's as the equivalent of the 500 HR benchmark in the Big Ball Era.

Yeah, it's pretty damned close. I probably should have lumped them in.
I'm not sure either is better or worse. They are just different.

Thome will become the 5th person of his era to get 600 HRs.
Have to go with YOU here. Jeter>>>>>> Thome.

600 HR in the juice era unfortunatley has an * by it regadless if the player juiced or not.

PJ, you gonna listen to Condon at 4?

I doubt he is on anymore. He went real radical the other day. Soon Ott will have his 4-6 slot back.

Baton Rouge and their recycled 3rd rate sports hosts. How about some new blood ?

Thome's is more impressive, imo. That's probably a little biased, though.

Arod is currently at 2762. I think he will get to 3000. Omar Vizquel is at 2831. He's old, but he might get it.

If he plays 5 more years maybe - which is possible for Omar
According to amount of ESPN coverage, Jeter's 3000 is exponentially more impressive than anything Thome does - and more impressive than anything anyone has ever done

I don't see what this has anything to do with self aggregating stats.
It's not like we're comparing Jeter's runs scored to Thome's RBIs...

600 HR >>>>> 3000 Hits
But Jeter getting 3000 hits >>>>> Thome getting 600 HRs

You could also include, Wade Boggs, started the same year as Ripken, & was Jeter's teammate for a few seasons.

You could also look at it his way-
Only 4 players all-time have hit 600 Hrs and not been linked to steroids. Hank Aaron, Babe Ruth, Willie Mays, Ken Griffey Jr., that's some good company. The only question is did Thome use?

I think 600 is more impressive by a good margin. However, Jeter's not done. He and A-Rod both could wind up with around 3,500 hits. And somebody said they thought Thome was going to pass Mays at 660. That ain't happenin'. I'd imgagine he plays 1 more year at the most.

Alex, I can see. Jeter? Nah.

This number really is incredible imo. Considering almost 2 years of prime to the Army and the park he played in for a big part of his career.

I agree, but I also think that Arod, Ichiro (if he plays until 40 or 41), maybe Pudge, and maybe Damon all have a chance to hit 3,000.
Needs 158 more, which is doable if he plays another full year after this one. The last 3 years before this season he was averaging about 107 hits/season, but he's not the full time C anymore for Washington with Ramos there. Only played in 39 games so far this season with only 25 hits and the worst avg of his career by a good margin
