If roles are reversed there is a zero percent chance that LSU would've been awarded the AP title. Sportswriters are complete morons.

ok my mistake... didn't know it was a NCAA rule

point remains though

another game against #9 Washington State would've looked better that weekend than a home game against 8-4, 4-3 Oregon State

and I just realized... they didn't play Oregon that year... the 3rd best team in the Pac10 (who beat Cal)

2003 will probably almost certainly be the last split title in history, because i don't see any scenario ever where the pollsters would vote for a team who didn't make the playoffs at #5 over a team in the playoff who manages to win two huge games in the playoffs.

What's more interesting is that, up until that point, OU only recognized AP Championships, despite having won the BCS 3 years earlier.

It wasn't until the AP awarded their trophy to USC, and not the winner of the title game that OU officially recognized anything other than an AP title.

The BCS was the system in place everyone agreed to, and LSU won it. End of story.

The bcs begged to differ.

For the only time since the BCS was formed, there is a split national champion. LSU finishes atop the coaches' poll by beating Oklahoma in the Sugar Bowl in a pairing of the top two teams in the BCS Standings. USC, ranked first in both polls on Bowl Selection Sunday, is left out of the BCS championship game when the Trojans finish third in the BCS standings. But USC wins the Associated Press' championship after beating Michigan in the Rose Bowl. Oklahoma, which spent the season as the top-ranked team in both polls, earns a spot in the Sugar Bowl by finishing first in the final BCS Standings even though the Sooners lose to Kansas State in the Big 12 championship game. LSU, the SEC champion, edges USC for second place in the final BCS Standings to advance to the Sugar Bowl.

Wrong. Never in the history of the AP or coaches poll had a team that was ranked number one and won their bowl game slipped from the number one spot. If LSU was number one going into its bowl game and won its bowl game, they would have remained number one.

The only people who still think that title was split are Bama fans and USC fans, which are the same people because it's nothing but bandwagon douchers hopping from one to the other.

I did. Minimal dishing on LSU. But still throwing the whole thing in doubt and trying to say that it’s legitimate to do so. We could do the same thing with Bama though. Bama fans are not the people that should be criticizing other team’s championships

I'll never understand why the BCS wasn't a 4-team tournament.

Slive proposed that in 08 but only the ACC commish supported him. Now we're stuck with this committee of kangaroos.

Which is just another way to say there was only one Coaches Poll national champion. In this you are correct. However, there was only one AP national champion in 2003 as well and that was the USC Trojans.

And before the season started what championship was the #1 goal for every team? To win the crystal ball.

Things worked out well for LSU that year. If USC gets into that game, LSU does not win the MNC.

You don't know that but thanks for giving us your opinion.

the only regular season game where they scored less than 21 points was a 20-13 win at Alabama in their 2nd game of the season

This was one of the reasons I had hope against OU, LSU beat Bama by 24

What was their excuse for skipping one Pac-10 team every year?

Conferences give the SEC shite for having an 8 game conference schedule but they had a Conference Championship game the entire time. The Big-10 and Pac-10 not only didn't have a Conference Champ game but didn't play everyone in their conference.

With one game left to play in 1946 Army was ranked 1 and Notre Dame ranked 2. Both won their games and Notre Dame jumped to #1. Technically, not a bowl game. Neither team played in a bowl game that year. That's as close as I could find prior to the BCS era.

Because USC had been in front of LSU in all three polls for the majority of the season.
You could argue that was an example of traditional media bias. As you state, the polls had USC ahead of LSU, while the formulas had LSU ahead of USC.

We saw this continue in 04, where Auburn never had a 2nd look despite finishing undefeated.

Saw this again in 06, where Ohio St vs Michigan was the presumptive game for the national championship, the BCS game was a formality, and Florida was considered an afterthought and a sacrificial lamb. And then, the Gators took a flamethrower to the Buckeyes.

Had LSU and Auburn enjoyed later 2000's SEC popularity rather than face the bias favoring the Pac 10 and Big 10, things (and polls) could have been different.
