If you match those 3 teams Miami holds advantage at almost every position but RB

QB-Testaverde
RB-Carter
WR-Blades/Irvin
TE-Shockey
OL-United Nations OL (Miami 00)

DL-Miami 86
LB-Penn St/Miami 00
DB-Miami 00

Yes but Miami matched up and down then in +20 yd they ran zones that screwed Vinny up

Miami even with 5 into still had chance to win and he threw it to Giftopolous. They ran man 2 which had never been seen really before

95 Nebraska Cornhuskers

The Cornhuskers scored 638 points (53.2 per game) while only allowing 174 (14.5 per game). Their average margin of victory was 38.6 points.

Beat #2 Florida in the Fiesta Bowl 62-24

I'd take the 95 Nebraska offense over 94 PSU. The Huskers scored 638 points; PSU scored 564. They also beat every team they played by at least 2 TDs. 94 PSU had 3 games that they won by 1 TD or less.

The 94 NU team was a better offense with Berringer, they did more things. That 95 team just mauled folks and was set up by the defense more.

Brooks Berringer was NFL level QB

I’m still pissed that 93 was screwed out of a NC by the officials in Miami. Bowden’s first title was given to him unearned.

You say that like it’s a negative mark on their capability. They’re pulled at the half because they’ve been playing murder ball. I’ve watched football for 25 years, I know a machine when I see one

no, I'm saying that because we haven't seen what we're fully capable of yet.

And it's still early.

Another all-time great team that should not be forgotten despite they lost the final game in a nailbiter, so many future first-class NFL starters and they dominated the regular season like it was nothing defeated Boz and the defending champ Sooners in the Orange Bowl with Vinny lighting their secondary up like a Christmas tree

That they lost to Penn St is mind blowing, an Epic choke job and poor coaching by Johnson an all time great. This the fable of the Tortoise and Hare in real life

Probably Miam’s best team of the 80s and early 90s

That 86 team was probably better than the 2000 team. The pros that came off that team was incredible. The 2000 team has the same type makeup as that team but Vinny being the better QB gives them the advantage I think.

The run of QB’s Miami had was incredible from Kelly until Costa. Compared to what the others had at WR Costa being able to get to the NC Game was a fluke but that Defense they had in 94 was reason they were good.

As well as great defensive coaching job by Paterno and *gulp* Jerry Sandusky in enabling Miami's backs and receivers in ways to gain 10 yards a pop basically up and down the field then completely shut them down once they reached the red zone and attain turnovers, 7 turnovers ain't gonna win anyone squat Miami's D played well enough to keep it close though

Vinny didn’t really light up OU it was not a blowout either. OU was just manhandled up front by Brown and company. The fallacy of the Wishbone not being a good offense was started there. Miami has OU old DL coach so he knew the reads and what the splits meant.

Didn't he throw 4 TD passes that game and complete 14 straight passes at a point? OOOOO poking holes in sms' argument

Never said that game was a blowout, in fact next to the UF game IIRC it was their closest regular season game, just that they defeated them and Vinny lit them up which he did 21-28, 261 yds, 4 TDs, 14 straight completions at a point

Vinny didn’t light OU up though I’m sorry you don’t understand he threw for under his average per game don’t you? You also understand it wasn’t his passing that day it was ability to run. Go read the news reports young one. Matter of fact it was Vinny avoiding sacks that gave them the big plays. Not Vinny lighting them up as you think.

PSU dared Miami to run. PSU was almost always dropping their linebackers in deep middle...they'd always send one linebacker on a blitz through different holes and stunted their D-line - relied on their D-line to stop Miami's run by themselves.

Every pick Vinny had was over the middle - going for the big play. PSU had decided - Miami was going to work for their Tds.

Dink and dunk and that was not Miami's style.

In fact, Miami's big play on their final drive was just a simple short out pattern that Blades turned upfield after breaking the corners tackle for a big gain.

John Shaffer (PSU's QB) went 66-1 in his high school and college career.

You have no clue what you’re talking about. Go watch the game and you’ll see that 2 TD came within a minute of each other also.

On a side note it would’ve been interesting if Barry would’ve kept his word to Troy and gone to the I completely and throw it how things would’ve been in 86, Troy and Vinny part 2 may had been an air show. But the broken leg was best for all involved probably.

I was at the Maryland game in 1986 when #2 PSU faced Maryland. It took a miracle interception to beat a 5-5 Maryland team 17-15.

We didn't think PSU had a chance against Miami.

Vinny and his cohorts were the talk of the entire CFB season.
