If Dan Snyder wants to use a racist moniker for his football team, he'll have to do so with no patent/trademark assistance from the federal government.

Exactly It is his brand and a smart businessman should be able to decide what is best for maintaining it. Snyder has done more to hurt his brand with personal moves than the name has ever done

Also... a simple trademark search shows there is a ton of questionable trademarks. I don't see anybody complaining about those.

Sure, some of you big-government types will disagree with me, but I'm just a small-government guy who thinks that people should be responsible for their own social offenses without needing the government to help.

Who are you to deem the wording offensive? Everyone should have equal protection of basic rights, that's the definition of small government.

You are a big government type that wants to impose the values of a certain sect over that of an American citizen.

Too bad I'm not a lawyer. I'd love to file a thousand suits against trademarks that 'offend' me.

Dipshit.

They are protecting free speech. They just aren't protecting patents and trademarks.

No more trademark? Ok, so the next step is for people to set up an amateur Washington Redskins football team in every city in America

A guy who has looked up the word in the dictionary.

If they were protecting free speech, the words that are used in a trademark would be irrelevant.

They are saying they'll protect some speech with a trademark, but they will not protect other speech with a trademark.

Good. What a fricking disgrace for the most advanced nation-state of all time to have such a nickname for a football team in its nation's capital.

I'm not surprised though.

..."that hapless race of native Americans, which we are exterminating with such merciless and perfidious cruelty, [to be] among the heinous sins of this nation, for which I believe God will one day bring [it] to judgement.”

exactly...now more people can profit off the use of 'redskin.' Seems like this would appease, not offend the peopel that are offended here.

Finally, my right to sell a shirt that says "redskins" on it is protected by the federal government. What's not to like?

I'm glad your campaign of socially guilty hand-wringing has been successful in this monumental effort to improve the plight of Native Americans.

Now I'm sure the ills in their society will be cured by this campaign (despite very few Native Americans actually participating in this quest for liberation).

God, white people are so awesome, righting wrongs and all.
