Great Article by Bomani Jones on the NBA player defined our generation. How the mighty have fallen.

LINK

quote:

Now, it's gone. So are his wife and family and, apparently, much of his money. He's no longer a star, not even at the Atlanta watering holes he frequents. We only hear about him when the cops are impounding his Lamborghini or creditors are beating down his door. After being so much, good and bad, to so many, Allen Iverson is a 36-year-old retiree. He is a nobody.

quote:

Does he have any fight left in him? We will find out soon. He may be finished as a basketball player, but he can't be finished as a man, if he ever was one. He's done too much, been too far and proven himself to be too strong. Right?

He seems totally unprepared for his greatest challenge: life. Iverson was tossed out of high school. He dropped out of college. Not even the gods of irony are funny enough to make A.I. a coach. He's demonstrated no interest in any activity meant to be performed 40 hours per week. In the most significant ways, he is alone. And there's no reason to think any of this will get any better.

wow, Allen Iverson has to be a complete imbecile to be broke. Dude had so many endorsements on top of his huge contracts....how??

according to NBA reference he collected appox $154million in salary over his career.

It is a reference to the fact Iverson was the toughest SOB in NBA history, and despite his small frame, he went into the lane and took and extreme beating from the big guys inside. He was a tenacious animal, and one of the most enjoyable players to watch in league history.

That's what its in reference to.

Immediate first thoughts:
Allen Iverson never defined basketball to me. He merely defined what arrogance is.

Second, what tragedy? That he blew his money? That he got divorced? That he never finished college? That he doesn't want to work a normal work week like a regular person? He got millions to play 82 games a year (more if he was lucky). That's not a tragedy.

When Matt Geiger bought AI's house in Philly, he said he left bags of cash, tons of shoes, and other stuff. He tried to return it but AI didn't care. AI was my favorite player growing up and is the reason the Sixers are my team, but he is an idiot. Hope he finds something to get him out of his financial debt and keep him occupied, but I don't see things ending well for Bubba Chuck.

very well said. He will always be my favorite basketball player. I loved watching him play. It's sad that his life has come to this.

his GMs didnt exactly put great offensive players around him. Those teams were built on ugly basketball. They'd knock you up/out with defense, and AI would either shoot them in to or out of a win.

i honestly think he could still play in the NBA, if he could cut down on his shots and become more of a passer. Be a real PG.

I still remember that Olympic team when AI was the only player who seemed to give a crap. He played his arse off while the rest of the team just stood around.

its so sad that his ego got the best of him towards the end of his career. He could not accept his diminishing skill set and that he needed to be more of a facilitator.

You knew it was a wrap for him when he lost the braids and had a "come to Jesus"/Michael Vick moment..but then grew his hair out again and returned to the cornrows

I was never a big Iverson fan but I respect the way the guy sold out. Gave 100% whenever he was on the floor. Thats rare in the game today.
