I still remember that Olympic team when AI was the only player who seemed to give a crap. He played his arse off while the rest of the team just stood around.

Wasnt Larry Brown the coach of that team? As much as those guys hated each other, they were alot of mutual admiration on both sides.

What if I told you a pot smoking, practice hating, 6 foot point guard would make 160 million over a 15 year career and be broke by age 36...

its not exactly about feeling sorry for him. But it is sad. Instead of focusing on the fortune he made, i think back to my childhood and how fortunate i was to be raised how I was.

Im sure if he grew up in some affluent Virginia suburb, with a stable family around him, and was proper educated, he probably wouldn't have turned out like this.

Second, what tragedy? That he blew his money? That he got divorced? That he never finished college? That he doesn't want to work a normal work week like a regular person? He got millions to play 82 games a year (more if he was lucky). That's not a tragedy.

Have you ever taken a lit class?

This is AI's issue. If you have ever seen an interview with his momma, it is easy to see she is the root of all his issues. He has her personality. Is really creepy and sad.

I always feel sorry for athletes like this. Most weren't raised in an atmosphere conducive to financial responsibility.

This, although he had more than his share of chances to pull himself out of the issues presented by his upbringing.

I couldn't find a GIF of the infamous Jordan Crossover but Tyrone Lue was almost as good as MJ

Several in fact. Still my question stands. How are Allen Iverson's problems a tragedy in any sense? It appears to be more of the inevitable outcome of his self-centered lifestyle.

quote:

That's why, no matter how boorish he could be or how self-inflicted his problems were, I rooted for Iverson on the court, and why I will continue to do so in life. He earned what he had, and he had a chance for even more. The short, skinny underdog who played harder than anyone in recent memory could be king, and he nearly did so without compromising personally or professionally. Even if that made him a jerk, it was one worthy of respect.

The older I got, the clearer it became that A.I. was going about things all wrong.

That sums it up pretty well. It sucks for him but he made his own poor choices.

Things don't have to be completely out of your hands to be a tragedy. The opposite if anything.

You don't think his likely terrible upbringing had anything to do with him making poor choices later in life?

I hate to hear this. I was just wondering a while back what he was doing now, after watching that replay about his fight in HS on ESPN. I always expected he'd stay close to the game in some fashion(although I know coaching doesn't fit). Hopefully he'll find something to fall back on before he's completely broke.

Someone gets it. There's a reason that you never hear of guys from middle class homes going broke...

30 for 30 did No Crossover: The Trial of Allen Iverson. It focused on his days in the Peninsula and the bowling alley incident. Really good stuff. My dad lived there in high school for a couple of years, and he said it was pretty tough then. He said the athletes from that area are incredible who are most notably Lawrence Taylor, Michael Vick, and Allen Iverson.

AI has always been one of my favorite players ever, and I really wish he could have had a financial agent of sorts to help him out. I wish him the best.

He had family to feed.

He really needs to go the whole mentor-youth-who-were-like-myself route like so many other ex-athletes have who are in his shoes, while, at the same time, having someone like John Lucas to mentor him. Man, these guys could really use father figures in their lives.
